Rear Leaf Springs Empty Rear Leaf Springs

Post by Guest Sat Mar 23, 2013 2:10 pm

Hi, been lurking for a while and finally decided to join.
Can someone post a picture of the rear leaf spring rear mount with spring attached?
I just got my springs back from the shop and they are rubbing the underside of the bed, but I am certain that I put them back as they were.
The question is: Do the shackles run up from the mounting point to the spring or down?
My springs are currently above the mounting point at the rear of the rear springs.

    thanks,

    Thanks.
Mine has a helper spring on top with 4 leafs in it. It is the helper spring and bands that are getting into the bottom of the bed.
Is that not a stock item?
It is a '66 pickup with a 3000 lbs. rear axle.

    thanks again

I would only be guessing, i'm sure some one with a pickup can tell you but i don't think they would be stock if they are hitting the floor

Here is a picture of my problem spring. It is unsprung in the pic, so not making contact.
The other side is fine. There are several ways to fix it, but if the helper spring is not needed then I might as well take it off.

what does the rubber bushings at the shackle and the leafs look like, ??? my guess is they are worn out, and giving additional travel, and I can't see needing those helpers unless you are hauling a ton of weight.

New bushings all the way around. I took the springs into the shop because the big retainer(not sure what it is called) on the passenger side helper spring was missing. This was allowing the top helper spring to rub the bottom of the bed. Had them put new bushings in also.
So, new retainer on passenger side with no issues, but the driver side which I didn't think had an issue before now rubs.

Helper springs are just that "helpers", which means by definition "the vehicle will work just fine without them". Smile If you're not carrying a whole bunch of weight all the time in the back you can just take them off. the are not a necessary part of the vehicle, but an optional addition. Good on you for the bushings and such. that will make things nicer in the long run!

Does anyone have a part number and mfg for new springs and bushings (65 A-100 panel)? Or is refurbing old springs the way to go?

    Thanks

There is nothing wrong with having the existing springs re arched. any thing bad would be replaced including the bushings The big trucks have this done opposed to a complete replacement. And less expensive

Is there a good supplier for blocks and longer U-Bolts? I would like to do about a 1.5" rear lift for that "Rod" look...

    Thanks!!

the longer u bolts would also be a stock item at a leaf spring repair shop in your area.

make sure the pinion angle doesn't go over 6 degrees when you lift the back or you van will eat rear u joints like candy. They make angle shims that you can use with your lift blocks to get it right, any decent drive line shop can set it for you.
