the thought had crossed my mind. I helped a neighbor convert a toyota rav to all electric and I realized it’d be MUCH easter on one of our vans. stumbled upon this youtube video, looks like a clean simple install, a member here?

if you power an electric motor to drive an alt, you will have a net loss.

I'd also like to know the specs, like cost, time to install, warranties on components and how well it operates.
Not that I'd do it. Too much of a gearhead to turn to amps...

the loss may be worth it as long as you can get more time from the batteries from an alternator

maybe the trick to the alt would be attaching to the drive shaft, then you recover juice when coasting. I’ve seen vintage bmw race cars that moved the alt and battery to the trunk and ran off the axle half shaft, mostly for weight balance.

I think the guy in the video says he has a range of 80 miles and it'd cost $2.85 for the electricity to go that far.

as for cost of the motor, controller and batteries… I’ve seen kits in the 2.5-4k range.

yeah, it’s more of a novelty and you’d have to want to have an EV. but the swap on these vans would be easy as there is no power steering, now a/c no brake booster-vacuum…. and if you could mount PV panels to the roof… it’d be a fun run around town, grocery getter.
