    hey all,

so my speedometer has always read about 5mph off(over). now its reading kind of whatever it wants. already pulled the speedo cable off and lubed it, ran it with a cordless drill and could hold a speed. I put it all back together and same results upon test drive. At least the MPH over or anything it wanted to read. Thinking it may be the gauge it the cluster itself.

If it always lies to you, then the tires, rims , transmission or rear end has been changed and the driven gear in the transmission does not match the speedometer anymore,,,,,,if the needle bounces, then you should try and remove the dash and speedometer housing, then lubricate the input shaft to the speedometer head.....

Disconnect the cable and it won't bounce anymore. Almost as good as turning up the radio for squeaks ;-)

I would agree if it's all lubed up it's probably a missing tooth on the transmission speedo gear. Most are plastic and last an amazing long time. I suspect they are plastic so they won't fail the trans when the break.

    Good luck.
