EGR and Engine Stands Empty EGR and Engine Stands

    Post by 64chevy Sat Nov 03, 2012 8:55 pm

This late model 250 I picked up has EGR on it. Is it worth it to replace the manifolds with non EGR manifolds or just use as is and leave the EGR vacuum line disconnected, which would keep the valve from working?

Are these Harbor Freight engine stands strong enough. Seems to hold it OK but it's a little bouncy so I've been keeping my engine hoist on it for safety.

I surely would be running some square tubing up from those front wheels to the front of the engine to take some of the pressure off the welds on the back,,,,,,just in case,,,,,,,,,somehow,,,,,for some reason,,,,,,,the China welds and metal don't hold.........if you are going to leave the EGR on it, put a solid gasket in it to block off the 2 ports in the valve,,,,,those seats get carboned up and leak....that vacuum hose does not go there,,,,,,you don't want EGR come in on a cold engine,,,,,there is usually a thermal switch with vacuum lines on it to allow the EGR to operate only after the engine reaches operating temperature....

Why not leave the EGR on and funtioning as it was intended?

It does not rob any horse power and it will give you on average about 3 mpg at highway cruse speeds.

Since EGR is part of the Smog system I assumed, maybe incorrectly, that it hurt efficient engine operation and mileage. But if it actually helps with mileage maybe I'll leave it on and look in the junkyard for some sort of thermal control system off a late model car for it like Don said should be there. I already planned on using a different carb on it.

I stored the 6cyl out of my parts van on the twin to that stand and if you tried to move it around felt like it could tip over at any moment. Bill

Think I'll use the manifolds as is for now. The EGR valve isn't working anyway. Pulled it off and put a vacuum source to it and the port never opened. Even after cleaning off the carbon deposits on it. Maybe some junkyard day I'll find what I need to complete and make the EGR system work properly and then I'll have a science project to see if it helps out mileage.
