    electric fans Empty electric fans

    Post by neondv8 Tue Aug 21, 2012 9:07 pm

i read a lot of good info on electrical fan here.... and now im just confused.
push fans ....pull fans...switches in the engine block.... not in the engine block...relays .....low speed fan.... high speed fan ...
so what is good for me? i have a 200 in my 66 with a c-4. im not sure what this motor came from originally.
im having problems with heat in city driving, and after i get off the freeway (if its moving its cooling )
any input and or photos of fan install in an econo will be appreciated.

    electric fans Empty Electric Fans

Post by Vanhaulin Thu Aug 23, 2012 3:33 pm

I just installed an electric fan that I got from Orielly's. It was designed so you can flip the fan itself to push or pull. I made it pull and installed on front side of the radiator. I also bought the optional thermostat to kick on/off as needed. It totally solved my overheating prob's and can now drive even when it's 110+ here. Investment, 100 bucks and well worth it. Hope this helps.

D0 you have have a belly pan on it. My 67 PU/170/stock fan has no fan shroud and a new Rad runs fine. No heat problems. Seal all the leaks around the sides specially the bottom. the pan really helps at low speed.

I mounted a 16" electric push fan on the front of my radiator. I bought it from Autozone, $65.00. Same fan is avalable online but the mounting legs on the Autozone fan are longer and fit the radiator perfectly. I added flanges to the front brackets to bolt the fan to. I have a 200, C-4 with an auxiliary transmission cooler mounted behind the front grill. I used a 4 core 66 Mustang radiator and spaced the 6 blade factory Ford ( 79 Fairmount 200 with A/C) fan 3/8" from the radiator. I also installed a coolant temp sensor in the thermostat housing, 185 on/175 off. Mounted the relay for it on inside of the motor box using one off the latch bolts. The circuit breaker is mounted in the battery box. I bought the sensor, relay, harness and circuit breaker as a universal kit online. The harness wires were almost the exact length needed, had to shorten one wire.My truck has never run over 185 regardless of temp or driving conditions. Before I installed the electric fan it would run hot when in traffic.

    Mike,
Second one is similar but I paid a lot less. I checked several ebay vendors and called them all. Turns out it was the same company selling under three different names, one was half the price.

I didn't do anything more than an ebay search on what Fred mentioned. lol. Fred will need to fill in the details - he's the one that used it.

FWIW the Spal kits are real nice. The fans are more $$ but you'll find they are built better and pull more air. I just put the following on my aluminum radiator, got a package deal from the seller:

    Fan
    Harness/Thermostat
    Mounting HW

    update:
the fan was working awesome, but mow the fan motor is getting so hot that it will shut off . i can hear the breaker pop. it will not go back on until the fan motor is cooled off. im thinking that i need to move the fan more like how donivan has his.( so its getting colder air by was of the belly pan )
the fan is 16" and puts out 3,100 cfm.
the thing is that it was working so good, but now it is unreliable!
here are photos of the set up.

There are a lot of things going on with FANS,,,,is it going to replace the one on the waterpump,,,,is it going to be wired in with a sensor to turn it on and off automatically to keep the radiator cool,,,,and then there is just adding a helper fan to blow air into the radiator that the waterpump fan will suck through the radiator and keep it cool,,,,and you add an on/off switch and a twist 60 minute timer to set it and forget it,,,and you can use it after you shut down the engine to cool down the engine and carb to keep the gas from boiling over and smelling up the van and flooding out the engine,,,,,I don't like that idea of putting a big fan on the radiator, blocking off the air to the radiator and drawing big amps out of the charging system,,,and that fan surely don't like being on that hot radiator,,,so in my world, I go to a Pick a Part and they are just laying on the ground,,,people want the radiators, not those fans,,,,and at !/2 price sales, they are $15,,,,,I would never leave home without my fan,,,,,

I ran into problems with the circiut breaker itself getting hot and tripping. Mine is mounted in the rear of the engine compartment but anchored to an aluminum plate. Only happened in severe stop and go traffic on a hot day. I put a jumper on the breaker to do a parade and had no issues then. I'd wager its not the fan itself. I will add I cooked my fan motor this weekend, but it made it 3 years and was a cheap unit to start with. If you can get the electronics out of the doghouse Id think you would get rid of the problem.

    That's interesting Digz.
I did wonder if the braker was able to take all
    That heat.

Digz, the breaker WAS the problem !
I wired a line switch to the breakr . It did pop so I hit the switch
And the fan goes back on.
I will be moving the electronics to a cooler spot.
    Thanks for posting

    hey Digz,
i got this at an auto electrical and fleet supply shop here in Seattle. this fuse holder is weather proof and will take the heat. it just so happens that the guy that sold it to me has a 68 A van.i was in hot and heavy traffic with no problem! so now no need to move all the electronics.
