    Hi Joe,

    Here's the decode.

    Duane, thanks once again. It's good to know they're being saved, even as parts trucks. Here's a decode:

    E16 = Econoline van series, extended body
    A = 240 engine
    H = Lorain Ohio assembly plant
    766814 = October 1965 serial number - 1966 model
    090 = wheelbase
    A = Raven Black paint
    E162 = Econoline van model, extended body, 1 ton (Heavy Duty)
    5 = red standard interior
    89 = van body style
    C = 3 speed transmission
    07 = 3.00:1 heavy duty axle (9 inch)
    4930 = 1 ton GVW rating
    129 at 4000 = certified net HP at RPM
    15 = Newark sales district

    The black paint color is uncommon - any idea of its history?

    Hi Roger,

    Jay does the decodes for me. He keeps a registry of all the vins he collects. The factory manuals have many errors in them and Jay keeps up with all this. He doesn't come on this site because he runs an old computer on dial up and this site is a little too much for it. He knows more about Econolines than I will ever know. He keeps the Econosrus yahoo group going and is a great place to get a solid answer on anything econo.

    Sorry for any confusion I may have caused. I thought I should give Jay credit for his knowledge as some people on here might think I knew something about Econolines. I'm just passing along info all I can. Just trying to help others the way I've been helped with my trucks.

    code 01 = 3.50:1 light duty axle (7-1/4 inch)

    Is this indicating that this has a 7-1/4 inch ring gear???

    Hi Roger,
    Yes, That is the ring gear size. 144's came with the 7 inch gear and 170's came with 7 1/4 inch gears. 240's and all heavy duty trucks came with a 9 inch rear.
