Electric Fuel Pump? Empty Electric Fuel Pump?

Post by bratbike Mon Oct 24, 2011 11:29 am

Someone put an electric fuel pump on my Eco which I have just changed out since the old one stopped working. You turn the key & the pump starts pumping. Should there be some safety device in there somewhere to shut the pump down in case the ignition is on but engine is not started or does the pump shut it self off? Question

As it is now, it will continue to try to pump until the key is off. The float and needle valve in the carb will keep it from pumping excess fuel into the bowl (when the float rises and closes the valve). Some people wire an oil pressure switch to only allow power to the pump when there is oil pressure. this means if the key is on, but the engine is not running, the pump is off.

Yes, the oil pressure switch with a tee for the stock one and the new one works. Wire that to a relay (see the great How To in the forum here) to power the fuel pump. Late model fuel injected cars/trucks have an inertia switch to interupt power in an accident. These can also be wired in, but would require research to select the right one, a good solid mounting and correct wiring. Interesting story on these; when Dodge was developing them, they wanted to test them to make sure only an accident would trigger it. They installed them in Baja race trucks (just as a test, not in the pump circuit) and they were able to calibrate them so even Baja racing would not set them off.
