Wheel Bearing help.. Empty Wheel Bearing help..

Post by Scott Sun Nov 09, 2008 5:36 pm

I was replacing the front wheel bearings today and hit a snag..

The passenger side obviously had its bearings go out at one time and chewed-up the spindle and hub. The spindle has a few deep gouges, but it should be fine. I didn’t notice the hub until today, just looked like the metal was ruffed-up, but when I went to press the inner ring into the hub it just dropped in, both of them. I can actually turn the ring inside the hub.

There was no problem when I drove it home and took it apart, but I don’t know how long the previous owner had been driving it that way.

So, do I need to buy a new hub, or is this one going to be fine?

numbers on the bearing and race the same as the ones you are putting in? if not you got the wrong ones and you should not use them. they will be to loose and dangerous. a good bearing supply will have a cross reference from one manufacture to another "timkin to national" and so on. look for the numbers from the old bearings or better still get them from the other side and go from there.

The races should be a press fit into the hub, Id double check the part numbers first, maybe one of the guys has the #s on hand . If they are that loose the hub is toast.

I had already pressed in the drivers side before I did the passenger side. I'll check to make sure the numbers on the bearing match the box.

That cup has to be a press fit,,,,and if its loose,,,you are done,,,,but those hubs are also used on Camaros, Novas, Chevelles and Pontiacs with drum brakes so you might have a chance of finding some. And it would be a good thing to find a source of front hubs for everyone running the TransAm type disk brake brackets, as well as those still running front drum brakes. Sooner or later, those cups work loose and spin.....
