Replacing my 67 windshield Empty Replacing my 67 windshield

After a slip with a screwdriver while working on the windshield wipers I know need a new windshield in my 67. Called the local glass shop and SURPRISE, they ordered the windshield and gasket , had it in two days and came to install it today.

After removing the old one (no surprise) I had some work to do. Surface rust and pitting and about a half dozen pinholes to repair.

So is Green Tint what was original? My glass looks clear, is that just because of the age?

I asked a local shop that said they could get it, but when I told him I didn't want green tint he seemed surprised. I told him the rest of the glass was clear, and I thought it would look funny.

I'm on the hunt for new glass now, and probably some POR-15 or something like that.

Right now getting caught in the rain gives me a stream across the dash, under the window, where it drips down on top of my fuse panel. I sold my motorcycle   Sad so I am looking to make some upgrades to the van to help me forget it about not having the bike anymore.

Almost forgot, what about the rubber seal? I'm guessing that since it's come up on here so many times that it's best not to just hope the glass company shows-up with the right one? Should I order this myself for them to use, where can I order it from, and do you have the part number?

Scott, here is the rubber parts list link.

    https://vintage-vans.forumotion.com/t45798-rubber-parts

It's also under the parts section if you need to find it again.

I was quoted $200-250 for a windshield.  It took a few tries to find a place that would measure and order.

Not sure on the green, but it seems to be what others here suggest.  It must be subtle.  You can get full tint as well which may be illegal but doubtful it will be an issue.  I plan to get a very light overall tint that fades down or just one light tint overall.  Too dark and it will be hard to see at night.

I would order your own seal.  It's pretty cheap compared to other seals for our vans.

I called my windshield place today to finally get the 68 done and they tell me they can no longer get the glass. Tomorrow I will be on the hunt for a new place.

    Any suggestions?

Post by Scott Tue Mar 08, 2016 2:36 pm

I found a local guy that has the glass I need, so I went ahead and pulled my old windshield to check the window frame and seal it up. It's not bad, looks pretty good, but I do have about 10 holes that rusted through. Some about an 1/8th inch in diameter, and one not quite big enough for a pencil.

Now the question I have is, what do I fill the holes with before I seal the metal?

And what should I use to seal the metal against future rust? POR-15?

,,,to do it right,,,,,,,,,,,,,you really need to cut out the rust and weld new metal in there,,,,,,Bondo will surely shrink and rust will keep spreading and you will have leaks messing up your wiring under the dash,,,,,,
