Fuse for Gauge Cluster Light? Empty Fuse for Gauge Cluster Light?

Post by Guest Mon Nov 22, 2010 12:21 am

The light for my gauge cluster recently died. It had been getting hard to get it to light up properly when the headlights were on. I had to turn the knob back and forth a few times and push the switch in and out before it made good contact and would illuminate properly. I was removing some hacked wiring from the PO and I think I may have popped a fuse, but I am not sure. All the other lights (exterior) are working and I can drive it just fine. Do I need a new headlight switch or is it a fuse. I don't want to start messing around under the dash unless I have to for fear of shorting some other "improvements" that were made to the harness. Just want to know what I am going for before I start digging in. I really dislike the fusebox on the switch BTW. Evil or Very Mad

    Thanks Vanners!

    Hey there fatkid,

Exactly the same story for me with the light switch (and the dash lights).

Installed a new light switch from Rock Auto - and everything is sweet now.

Somehow I managed to blow a fuse about the same time I changed the switch (this also takes out the interior light) but all ok now.

    Regards,
    Rhys

Does the Rock Auto switch have the built-in fuse panel like the original?

    Thanks,

I noticed that they offer 2 different switches. Which one did you guys order? Would one presume that they are both the same as OE?

    Thanks again,

I can't remember which one I ordered, probably the cheapest one. Because I would normally order mulitple items, choosing items that draw from the location has big international shipping implications.

I'm sure either switch would be OK. (Just remember the switch doesn't come with the fuse holder - it is identical to your original in that it will directly plug into the fuse holder on your existing wiring loom).

    Rhys

I'm asking all these questions only because I haven't removed the original one.

So does the fuse panel plug into the switch? Like a 2 piece?

Yes - it plugs in and is held on to the fuse block by two spring clips.

I had that same problem before it died. I am not sure if it is coincidence or if I nuked it when I was fixing the wiring.

You might be able to get the dash lights to work,,,,,,look at this picture,,,,you can see gangrene setting in on the dash light terminal in the switch,,,,,,and the way the system works is there is a coil of resistance wire, looks like a spring, that the arm rubs against to change the resistance in the circuit to dim the lights. its just like a volume control, so try and clean that contact and the coils with emery cloth and see if the lights work again,,,,,
