wheres the Volkswagens?
Hey this forum is for 60s vans so how come there is no section for VW vans? Just wondering seems like we should have one.

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
They are welcome as is all vintage vans, we do have a section for all other makes
https://vintage-vans.forumotion.com/early-enough-friends-guests-f6/
You don't see many VW's here for the very reason there are tons of VW sites. The same goes for the Corvairs

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
I wasn't going to comment but VW owners generally like to call their VWS "busses" not vans. When vanning first got started we allowed VWs into events but not many came. They wanted to distance themselves from vanners, that is why they have their own sites and there aren't many VW owners here that can help with parts and knowledge.

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
That was the attitude of a lot of people. When my club started in the late 1960s we allowed VWs but only two ever joined and they soon left. After that e became an American made only club and we even narrowed that down to earlies only later on. We now allow 68 and 69 vans but you already have to be a member because people with anything but an early won't even be considered as a prospect. With us every member votes on every prospect and it has to be a 100 % yes vote. Our rules are pretty much patterned after the Hells Angels rules since we used them as a model for our club. Their first chapter started here and so did we. We are still affiliated with them to this day.Van Halen wrote:I thought it was more of a Made in America thing!!!

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
WHEELS of CONFUSION never had a rule against VW's (and still doesnt)but never had one join they attribute it to the fact that the 4 bangers had a hard time keepin up in with hotrodded out V8's during caravans.

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
I personnally think the VW crowd was more of the mammas & the papas crowd and the vanners are more of the black sabbath crowd.

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
The VW crowd to me were all hippies and felt they were above the rest of us vanners. I did see a few VWs with Porshe motors that had no problem keeping up with V8s. There is a VW bus club in Oregon and they all look like they just stepped out of the 60s.

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
hahaha yeah Charlie, thats true! Vanishing Breed-I know whatcha mean! One time me and dad saw a VW Bus at a car wash and we went over to talk to the owner and he was obviously a hippie! I don't think he liked us comparing our van to his 'bus'. lol My parents are hippies as well but they aren't all out hippies.

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
I would love a Thames as well but they are just too rare. I also love the Morris J types. This one in particular that i have seen at quite a few shows....
The VWs are very common over here, but i'm not a fan myself. Some of my friends drive them, and they look ok, but they are drastically under powered, too expensive and too rusty. The engine is in a horrible position as well....
As for getting parts over here for my Econoline, it is impossible, but most things can be found in the USA and ordered.

Re: wheres the Volkswagens?
I might be 30-40% hippie myself... I like the vw buses, but those german parts have gotten EXPENSIVE! I've heard of the porsche engine/bus transpalnt. sounds like a nightmare to me. I'll keep my porsche engine in the 70 911. going fast in one of these vans sounds like a bad idea; poor brakes, not much cornering ability and having your face near the windshield and a metal dash.... I prefer to take my time and enjoy the view from that huge panoramic window.
