We need to know if you got the 13/16" socket size spark plugs or the 5/8" . In 1970, they went to those smaller plugs,,,,,,and someone could of changed your engine or head.

ok that must be what happened because they are the 5/8. the stamp on the side of the block is 399 4257, i thought that i saw on here somewhere that was a 250 but i could be wrong. the plugs that are in it are autolite 145.

Engine can be any size,,,,,,but you have to deal with that particular cylinder head,,,,but I think #26 Autolite will work for you,,,,,,the intake manifold is removable on it, right? its not part of the head?

All the 6 cylinders look the same,,,,,,,the only difference is the bore and stroke,,,,,,so its easy to tell what size it really is when the head is off,,,,,,,

are there any stamps on the heads that let you know which head it is or do you have to take it off to figure that out too? i just wanna make sure i get the right plugs for the head i have.

You are all messed up now because that engine or cylinder head don't belong on that vehicle,,,,,,and plugs are made for certain vehicles,,,,,,so you got to do the best with what you got,,,,,,,all the 6 cylinder Chevy engines in the book with that cylinder head use #26 or 147 for heavy duty service,,,,,and that is what you got in there now only a different heat range,,,,,,,the 26 might just be a power tip size or a resistor type,,,,,,,ask the parts store what is the difference between the 26 and 147,,,,,,,,,they both are for the newer 6 cylinder head that you have,,,,,,,put the 145's back in there if they look like they are working good,,,,,,there is no right answer anymore,,,,,,its just finding what works best for what you got,,,,,,you ain't going to find it in any book,,,,,,,but the 26 and 147 are the closest you are going to get,,,,,,,,,,

Feel free to post the differences between the 2 Chevy Autolite spark plugs,,,,,,,#26 and #147, Rod.

And here are the differences between the Chevy 6 cylinder engines,,,,,,Torgue and horsepower,,,,,,,and if you have the head off,,,,,,real easy to measure the bore and stroke because they are not even close to each other,,,,,,

I had the same problem (different top end) with the engine in my 66 when I got it. Since the young guys at the autoparts stores weren't born when our vans were made, all they know is what the computer tells them. I put the autolite 26 in and it is running great since. I would listen to Donivan...he has forgotten more about these vans than I will ever be able to learn.

Try to find a parts store that has a gray haired guy behind the counter. The young guys generally don't understand heat ranges and mix & matching plugs, heads and blocks because the rice burners don't do that much. And, since they are used to modern fuel injection, the computers make just about any plug range work. I have a gray haired guy I go see whenever I'm experimentin with plugs. I suspect, you might take a couple of three tries to get them right. Good luck, Mark
