Has anyone ever swaped rearends from below the springs to on top of the springs; and how much of a pita is it?

i thought about it but never did it.. but it looks fairly easy just have to cut off and re-weld the spring mount to the top of the axel

Should also do a "C" notch in the frame rail for travel too. Check with some lift/lower shops, they may have a kit to make it easier.

getting your pinion angle right is very important. otherwise you will have vibrations to deal with. not impossible to overcome but some math and thinking to do before welding the spring perches back on.

pretty sure you can use a c body axle for that... i believe the perches are the same spacing but on the bottom of the axle...

I've seen Es done that way, haven't seen an A yet.
As mentioned, the rear just needs to have the pinion angle set before welding the perches. They can be found at trailer shops and hot rod supply places.
You need to know the diameter of the axle tube and the width of the spring.
C motches can be fabricated or bought. Hot rod places again.
There has been mention of issues when doing the front, mainly bump steer and some clearance issues.

Yes, but if you have to weld on new perches to the axle, you mght as well do it right.

I measured the original angle and had perches welded on the axle in my '40, but they ended up off when installed in the car (8 degrees). I tried to shortcut this, and ended up having to do it over. I cut them back off and started over.

What I ended up doing was to bolt everything together, centering the axle side-to-side (tires installed to check for clearance), and making sure the rear axle was centered in the wheelwell opening (most perches have the locating hole centered, some do not!). With the rear axle supported so the springs were compressed to normal ride height, I checked the angle of the trans and the rear as shown. With the U bolts just cinched, I was able to twist the axle to the correct angle. Tack the perches to the axle, then disassemble as much as needed to finish weld. Try to keep the heat soak to a minimum, you do not want to warp the axle tubes.
