Your van was made to take a 283 or 307 V8, a 350 should drop in there like butter

what u have to look for before making a drive shaft is the bell housing is biger and longer it will hit where the doghouse meets the floor so engine cross member may have to be spaced lower the engine crossmember will go in backwards but it will hit the steering link then the van hits a bump so put engine and trans up in before making trans mount or driveshaft i have b&m cable shifter to th350 ed

Ok so Van Ed brings up something I have not heard of but is worthy of discusion.

"bell housing is biger and longer it will hit where the doghouse meets the floor so engine cross member may have to be spaced lower the engine crossmember will go in backwards but it will hit the steering link then the van hits a bump so put engine and trans up in before making trans mount or driveshaft "

Reversing the engine mount cross member?
After reading that I had a look at mine. According to what he is saying my engine mount has alwasy been in backwards. If my suspension plunges hard enought to squash the bottom out bumpers on the springs then yes it will hit the steering tie rod. But my 700R4 is sitting in my van just the same way I have seen in pictures of everybody elses. Aslo If I were to reverse my engine mount, that would put my engine about 8" further back. And ya, I would have to move the dog house back which would put the rad almost at the rear of the front seats. My engine cross member also has a drain hole right at the lowest point, If the mount were reversed that hole would not be at the lowest point anymore.

I had heard that the 64 with a 4 cylinder engine had the mount in the other way around.

So whats the gige! is mine backwards or is van Ed's backwards?

Thanks Don: that means mine is corect, I sort of figured it had to be or the engine would be way back. It is an interesting idea if you want a real mid engine van.

How are the 2nd gen vans? Do they slant? can they be reversed?
