Found a 1st gen. GMC and am looking to decifer the VIN (owner is digging for the title, but I'm anxious to know what it is!!) code. Anyone have a site they use to decifer early Chevy/GMC vans??? Or I can PM ya the numbers and someone can help me out...
    Thanks!!!

I know your looking to decipher a 1st Gen. Number, but this looks like a good place to put the 2nd Gen. too.

This page I scanned from the 1967 Service Manual explains how to decipher the VIN. I can only be sure that it's good for 1967, they might have changed the scheme later.

Only 3 things show up in a 1st gen Vin number if it is from 1965 or 1966,,,,,they all start out as G12, then there is a 5 if it is a panel, 6 if it is a SportVan ,,, next is the year, 5 for 1965, 6 for 1966,,,,,then a P , then production number starting with 100000. And those 1964 vans start off with the year, 4, and you won't find a SportVan in them......let me guess your VIN,,,,,G1255P120555 or G1256P120555 ,,,,

OK, I was wrong earlier when I said this worked fine for my van.

The page I posted above was from the Chevy Service Manual, and 99.9% of the time that works fine for my 68.

My van is a GMC though, so I guess the VIN works a little different.

    Mine is: GS10GPB20685

The Vin numbers come in a lot of different flavors,,,,they keep getting longer and including more information as the year gets newer,,,,,they changed in 1965,,,,then in 1967,,,,so our Early Chevy Vans, 1964-70, have at least 3 different formats,,,,,and then,,,,THOSE GMC's,,,,they got their own formats,,,,,,,

If thats your white van,,,,,2 latches on the doghouse cover and 5 slot grille,,,,,,its a 64 or an early 65 like mine,,,,,,,and if the Vin starts with a 4,,,,,,,its a 64
