Well folks I'm excited. I finalized my drive train and wheel selection today. Took quite a bit of research and time on the phone but it's done.

As posted in the past PB2 will be powered by a 330hp 350ci Crate Motor with a Level-3 700R4 4spd O/D Automatic Trans and I now know a 3.75 geared limited slip 9" rear end with 11" disc brakes. Along with the M1D front disc brakes I should have no problem coming to a stop. At 70mph I should be right at 2060 rpm in O/D.

The wheels will be 15x8 with a 4.5" backspacing which will clear all the disc brake parts. Tires will be 30" with an off road(ish) tread design.
Here's the wheels I'm going to run and I may have the centers powder coated black, but leave the center caps chrome. That's still to be determined.

Congratulations PB. Can't wait to see photos. Are there descriptions of the rear discs you will use on this or the old forum?

The rear end will be custom built by Currie, their rear disc brake set up is the same as a Ford Explorer.

I see at their web site a kit that shows under both Ford and GM, their CE6012 kit for ~$500. Is this the one you will use?

Since I am going to put the M1D type on the front of my 67 G10 I thought I also ought to do the rears too. I see a lot of rear kits on the web but don't know if there are any that will just bolt on to these vans since there are no readily availble front types (other than the M1D and the type Donivan is using). I can imagine the plate holding the rear breaks on the vans may be the same for the pickup trucks so the possibility of a bolt on disc type is better.

I appreciate your help with the info.
    Thank you,

Turns out the wheels I picked out are a 2 piece with a huge bead of silicone to keep the air from leaking.

NOT! Back to the drawing board for wheels.

Hey Donivan, do you have rear disc brakes or still drums on youe red beautie? I have seen at some after market web sites bolt on kits but the bolt pattern of the drum break backing plate is the key for their brakets to fit. I will check into your tip about the Caddie rears brakes. Thank you for the info.

I got drums on my rear,,,,,,Those guys took the backing plates off an Eldorado maybe and it fit the axle tube holes and I think had to grind the axles a little for a rotor to slip on them. There are some pictures of the set up in the old forum,,,,,somewhere,,,,,,,,

I think RipVan Arkie has the Cadillac rear disks and M1Dadio used the whole 79 Firebird rear end for his rear disks

Not really,,,,,the majority of your braking action is from the fronts anyways,,,,,BUT,,,,,if shoes, wheel cylinders, drums and brake hardware get harder to find,,,,THEN,,,,it will be time for rear disks,,,,,,

I don't think I will put rear disks on my 64, but my 2005 work van has 4 wheel disc brakes on it and I have 98,000 0n the factory brakes and it still stops good. I think the rear disc's help the fronts more so they don't have to do most of the work.

It would be better if you had rear disk brakes,,,,you might even get a parking brake that holds,,,,,we just need more information on the conversion choices,,,,

As I recall some outfits make semi generic rear disc brackets, the bolt pattern for the plate holding the drum brakes is the key. If you have the dimensions from one you guys have taken apart or could post a photo of that part with a ruler in the image for comparison, I can see if I can track down a kit that might work.

I've put a few Stainless Steel Brake Corp rear disc conversion kits on early Mustangs. They seem to be holding up well and were real simple installs. I've never looked into what they have for Bowtie applications.

Hey Don- What are the chances of this `79 G20 12 bolt rear end we have up here fitting under my Early? If it'll go and has an acceptable gear ratio, I may convert it to rear disc and run with it. I'm sure it'd be cheaper than the Currie set up and work just as well. Are the 12 bolts limited slip? I really don't want a one legger.

    OK Kakster,
Here is a picture of measurements,,,,the Black is the outer size of the flange,,,,the Red is the bolt hole centerlines. And all that stuff is offset

    And PolarBear,
You should have a decal under the hood or glove box listing the rear end installed on that 79. and you might have to remove the cover to see if its a Posi and gear ratio. Our van rear ends are NOT in the center,,,,the engine and driveshaft are 2" over to the right. So you would need to take some measurements off that 79 to see how it compares to yours.

    Donivan,
great find. After looking at the image you posted the other day I was amazed at the lack of symmetry of the flange. All the sites I checked out had what seemed to be brackets to fit very symmetric (rectangular) flanges. I will now see what the info you just found leads to.
    Thank you.

I will get some pictures of the rear brackets on that Chevelle,,,,,only 3 holes are used on the flange. The calipers have a lever built on them for the parking brake cable. The fronts came all assembled,,,,,just undo the ball joints,,,,,,

I checked the web site and it turns out they are close to my work so I can probably visit their store and talk to these guys. Their rear kit is nearly $800 so one must be prepared to step up. When I talk to them I will ask if their set up will work on these vans of ours. The next question then is..... rear disc brakes or gas??... Question

I called opgi (original parts group inc.) and the guy there did not know if the chevelle kit would fit these vans but directed me to where they get the kits from, cpp (classic performance products). Again the guy at cpp did not know if their kits fit the chevy vans but he sent me an image of the flange their brackets fit. I post below my version of the flange. Some of the dimensions look like what Donivan posted above and there is a certain lack of symmetry, but I am not sre. The guy at cpp said they would return 80% of the purchase price if their unit did not work out. I am curious what any of you all think about if it looks like it would work.
    Thanks for any input,

My buddy took off his 64 Chevelle backing plate assemblies and put the disk bracket kit right on. I took his old backing plates and put them on a spare 1st Gen rear end and they fit. And they look exactly the same,,,,same shoes and hardware,,,,He also tried one of my axles in his rear end and said it fit also except it was a little longer. The only thing is that you need at least 15" wheels for clearance for the calipers,,,,,
