Gas tank for a 69
Just looking online it appears a gas tank from a mid 80's G10 would work. Anyone do this? For $100 it seems worth trying.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Gas tank for a 69
1st of all ANYBODY with a 67 should measure how wide their tank is and see if it is the useless 17" wide, 16 gallon, 1st Gen tank and let us know,,,,,,also our tanks fill from the side, filler tube comes through the frame,,,,,,AND,,,,there is only 2" space above the tank for the sending unit and hoses, so these top fillers with electric pumps would take a lot of modifying. People do move that front tank crossmember forward to install the bigger 2nd Gen tank.

That one worries me because the filler is on the top of the tank, I don't think that would work. The one I posted fills from the top, side. Might be tight but I think it would work. The thing that is keeping me from pulling the trigger is there is no vent in the newer one. I think I'm just going to add my own though.

Mine is a 69 and I didn't think to measure the tank before I got rid of it. I had a buddy picking up scrap from me and told him to take it without thinking about it. I kinda wish I hadn't. It wasn't savable though, the entire front wall was rusted out of it.

Re: Gas tank for a 69
Someone peek behind their drivers rear tire and measure how high and wide their 2nd Gen tank is,,,,,here some measurements of a 1st g10 and a 3rd G20 I am working on,,,,I am using these portable 1 and 5 gallon plastic gas containers on the people that let their equipment sit for over 6 months or put fuel stabilizer in their tanks that turns the gas into pumpkin pie and clogs everything up,,,,,aint no fun pulling, draining that 36 gallon tank,,,,,,,,

I plan on using my stock sending unit. If it doesn't fit I will use the one for that tank. As far as the tank fitting if it doesn't hang down too far not much else matters to me. I'll make it work.

Re: Gas tank for a 69
The 17 inch dimension on the first generation tank expands to 24 on the second (at least on my 68), just fitting within the cross supports. There's 33 inches between the "frame rails" which makes for access to the fill and vent tubes, plus some room for running dual exhausts on each side of the tank, so don't think too big. It would be nice to find a tank with stock W and L, but an extra 3 or 4 inches depth.

Re: Gas tank for a 69
I used a Spectra Premium GM8 tank in my 108 and it fits the space perfectly.....
It's not a direct fit as you will have to make custom nesting and straps for it and modify the thru-chassis pass thru and use a hose instead of a metal spout....
I put a thread about it in one of these forums...
Here is that thread:

The GM8 tank DOES HAVE a vent hose that goes in the top of the tank through the pump/sender module..... You have to mount this tank about 1.5 inches lower to allow space for the module dome and vent hose and to get the fill spout low enough to match the frame pass-thru hole....
These tanks need to also be mounted as far forward as possible because the fill spout is the same distance from the front of the tank as the stock tank....

The GM8 tanks have sender and/or pump modules available and the ohms are the same as 68-70 gauges.....
It's been awhile, but my recollection is that the GM8 tank is 29 inches wide and 21 or 22 inches inches front to rear and 12 " deep....
I believe that you will need the sender module to seal the hole, but also because the pickup tube is part of it....
