Re: chevy oil dip stick tube length
I had a 350 small block with same problem, after putting in 5 quarts my dipstick showed it a quart low. It was a aftermarket chrome tube and stick so I figured it had to be off. I cut the tube so it read full at 5 quarts.

Re: chevy oil dip stick tube length
Okay the original 65 & 66 van tubes are ~ 6/3/4" - shorter than the later cars etc.
I suspect you may have P/N 3828073 which is 8-31/32" long.
On your dip stick what is the distance from the stop (where it mates to the top of the tube to either Full | | ADD marks.

Doni: what's your thought on the oil sender being in a different spot than yours?

Re: chevy oil dip stick tube length
I think we need to look at all our straight 6 engines and see if anyone has their dipstick BEHIND the oil sender unit,,,,,,I surely aint never thought about it,,,,,,,but now that you brought it up,,,,,,maybe its a newer engine,,,,,maybe its one of those for one that came with the integral head,,,,maybe its a Canadian engine engine,,,,,,,,maybe its a Mexican engine,,,,,,,,maybe its a Pontiac engine,,,,,maybe its an Oldsmobile engine,,,,,,I'm looking at 4 engines here and all those are forward of the oil sender,,,,not really forward, the tube hole is right below the sender hole and the tube just leans forward,,,,,,your tube may be in the right place, its the sender thats in a different place,,,,,,,,so lets see if someone can solve your,,,,,,,,,,,,mystery

I'm on a Wikipedia sit and it shows G M made all sorts of Inline six's over the years and like you said was it a car a truck and what country? I'm 20 mile's from canada it could be a Acadian (canadian nova)?

Re: chevy oil dip stick tube length
Well..... Assuming you have a stock pan and no oil coolers....
I think what I would do is an oil and filter change putting in five quarts of oil...
After running it a few minutes, I'd either re-mark the "full" mark or just make a mental note that what you are seeing in that moment is "actual full"....
Backing up a bit, wen you've poured four quarts in, you can mentally or physically re-mark the quart low mark...

Re: chevy oil dip stick tube length
but is 5 Quarts the correct amount? Thats where i started (what is the oil capacity) Some site's say 4 and 1/2 ? i'm reading over full with a12' stick and 5" tube that i saw on a site was what they had? It mite be the oil pan so maybe we need to know it's dimension???

Re: chevy oil dip stick tube length
It's four plus the filter which is actually a bit over four in the pan because a filter holds less than a quart....
