Pop out window gasket question Empty Pop out window gasket question

Post by Keith D Mon Nov 11, 2019 4:48 pm

I am putting in pop out windows in the rear two doors that originally had fixed windows.

I have gasket material for pop out windows that I bought on eBay. They are a length of gasket material that you cut to length and press over the rib in the door's window open area. At some point the two ends butt up against each other.

My question is did the factory use this style or was it one molded piece? if it was one piece that the ends butt up to each other, where the ends meet should this be at the top middle or the bottom middle of the window frame? or somewhere else?

Also where the two ends meet should there be some kind of sealer used to join the two ends or do you just have them touch without anything joining them?

Any tip on making a clean cut of this material would be appreciated.

    Thanks... Keith

I was thinking that it would not be water tight that way. That's why I thought the factory did something different.

Can you post a picture, I’m having a hard time picturing your dilemma.

i belive they butted together, but had a smaller piece inserted in the end that joined the other end when they came together. maybe a 3" long piece of vacuum hose id put it on the bottom.

That makes sense putting in a 3 inch "splice" piece into where the ends come together.

At work we have commercial washers that have door gaskets that the ends butt together. They have about a 3 inch dense foam piece that goes into the gasket where the ends meet and it keeps it from leaking water out the gasket.

    Thanks...

I looked in truck and I had some of the foam splice that I use at work and it fits perfectly Smile

I need seals for my Chevy. I went to the wrecking yard a few days ago and found some nice rubber on a newer Van.

To answer a couple of questions, the seam was put behind the latch, it was not glued together and did have the foam piece in the channel. (see picture)
These rubber seals do not have a metal rib inside and are longer than I will need for my windows. I haven't put them in yet but think they will work well. They were $5.00 each at Pick a part.

    Keith,
If it's not too late, I'd recommend not putting openable windows in the rear because they suck in exhaust and dust if open when moving. Of course you can just keep them closed when moving. If it's an option, put the openable windows on the sides instead.

    Good to know information...Thanks.

Mine has a metal rib, hopefully tin snips will cut it. If I don't work this weekend I will try to get it installed.

I don't have windows on the sides only in the back. My exhaust will be coming out the sides in front of the tires.

But I won't have the windows open when driving, just when parked so I won't be breathing in spent exhaust.

    Good advice... Thanks.
