Re: German Goliath
If I may chime in with some details
That's a Goliath Express, build 1953 to 1961. Goliath was part of the famous Borgward group (the brand now belongs to some chinese car company - and they actually produce a car under the Borgward brand).
Borgward went brancrupt in 1961.
Technically, it's a front wheel drive. rekbender stated flat four water cooled - then it is supposed to be a 57-61 model. It had almost 67cui (yes, that's no error) with blasting 40 hp!
Earlier models were even better: 41cui or 54cui with whopping 29 / 40 hp - they still had the same two cylinder two-stroke engines used for passenger cars. Still much better than the original samba by VW...
VW - they change to the Express' concept (front wheel drive and water cooled) only 25 years later for their vans/pickups ("Transporter").
But back to Goliath, they also build the famous three wheeler "truck" GD750 in various models. Taken from german Wikipedia (image under Creative Commons licence):
What a strange design.
That was replaced by no better in 1955 (until 1961, again) with the "Goli" (also taken from Wikipedia) (image under Creative Commons licence):
And contrary to the very modern flat-four-water-cooled late Express those three wheelers still had the two stroke two cylinder engines in... The high-end engine with 15hp out of 30cui was optional... standard was a 24cui with 13-14hp... max speed was almost 35mph...
Unbelievable, from todays point of view and also, if you compare with what you guys in the US had at that time...
