What s the preferred air filter for the Holley 1904? I m using one of these dinky Mr Filter's and it seems to be suffocating the my 170. I thought I was flooding out the motor, but took off the filter and it ran fine. I suppose I just need something with more surface area.

Re: Holley 1904 Air Filter needed
On a Chevy, running the Daytona remake version of the 1904, I used the stock air cleaner set up with its big 10" filter, no problems. Those small filters over the carb also suck in hot air from the manifold, most stock set ups have a snorkel to the cold air side of the engine, makes a difference especially when idling...

Here's an original early econoline air cleaner on eBay. I would buy it now asap, they don't come up very often

That's for a 24. The 170 had a different air cleaner. The 1904 even different. It used a dry paper filter air cleaner that clamped on the neck of the 1904. They are hard to find. Only available in 61-62. In 63 they went to the oil bath. Here's some pics of the air cleaners.
This is the 63 and later oil bath.
This is the 61-62 paper filter. The look similar to the Falcon-Mustang air filters but have an offset hole for dog house clearance.

Re: Holley 1904 Air Filter needed
Sucking in hot air. That's exactly what seems to be going on. In addition the filter appears to be fouling up from the exhaust air put out be the breather cap.
I guess the issue is the Holley appears limited by the clamp-on top. There is no threaded rod mounted on it.
If I purchase the threaded rod adapter I ve seen out there will the oil bath type fit on then?
Secondly, the breather cap has a hose port on it. Should there be a hose to this and where does it go to?
Other then that it feels great to be out shaking it down and figuring out what the next step is (brakes, tranny?, wheel bearings).

Re: Holley 1904 Air Filter needed
Have you tried finding a 61-62 air filter? I would start with Jay Long over at econosrus yahoo group. He may be able to head you in the right direction.

Classic inlines has some cold air kits for the little six. They get expensive but look like they would work great. I don't know if they have a hat that works on the 1904.

I have never tried to make the oil bath work on a 1904. I went looking for my oil bath that came off the 170 in my previous pictures but I can't find it right not. I'm running a Motorcraft carb with 1904 air filter. I modified the air filter to fit the center stud Motorcraft. You would at ltaes need the clamp on the paper air filter to hold anything on it. I don't think it would be very easy to put a center stud in the 1904. It would need drilling in the carb neck at least.
