    Custom Pickup????? Empty Custom Pickup?????

Post by EconoUSAparts Sun Feb 01, 2015 5:37 pm

This is being discussed on Facebook. Attached is a link to a few pics of an A100 pickup with the Custom Sportsman outer trim on it. The guy says it came that way from factory. It has the roof and both belt line trims and trim across the tailgate too. It also has the dashboard trim with deluxe horn ring. It does not however have the chrome bumpers normally seen on a Custom Sportsman van. Has anyone ever seen this before? The guy also says the body holes are from factory and not drilled to further support the claim its factory built that way.

Custom Pickup????? Empty Fancy A100 Pickups

Post by terencejiminy Mon Feb 02, 2015 6:12 pm

    Hi gang.
There was ONLY ONE A100 pickup built with all those Custom Sportsman side and rain gutter trim. !967 the plant built a PU for the new Warren Truck Assembly Fire marshal. It was also painted in 67 Ford Candy Apple Red (non metalic). It was BEAUTIFUL. I road tested it. Chrome Bumpers and Chrome Jr West Coast Mirrors. 318 2bbl 727 and 3.91 posi.
Hate to say he drove it about a year but hated it. Got parked on blocks behind the plant. It was there when I left Dodge Truck in 73....... SAD
Please realize anybody could add all that Sportsman Trim to an A100 pickup from a couple donor Custom Sportsmans. Long pieces from the left side worked on the right AND on the tailgate.

Ter that was my argument but he said all the holes were factory, not drilled and *claims* it's all original.
I found it odd it didn't have chrome bumpers too. He didn't answer when I asked if it had the white steering wheel and deluxe horn ring. Either way it's the first time I've seen it on a pickup.

thanks ter, some interesting info there.
sounds like what your saying Tim the holes would have been drilled,
Tim why would they use a white steering wheel opposed to black.

Rethinking this I believe Dodge used color matched wheels on the Customs. I believe mine was tan.

yes Tim i agree with the color matched steering wheels on the dodge,
i'm not sure but i think a red or orange paint would have a black wheel,
Being a custom should have a horn ring.

I agree on the horn ring. My take on this particular truck is its not a full Custom model. I think it was either added after production at some point by dealer or owner, or just special ordered with the chrome trim package. Back then weird stuff got special ordered. Again, that's just me Monday morning quarterbacking. I could definitely be wrong.

I'll call Ter back to get more info, but him working the plant and knowing the Detroit plant
only built 1 of them is interesting, He was telling me how they bent the chrome at the plant
to fit. Some things you never forget,

The WHITE: AKA Commander Wheel, was used on Motor Home (M300 and M375) chassis ONLY. They are too deep for an A100-108 anyway. Also the White wheel was on the older-first Motorhomes. You can tell ALL of these since they had a DASH mounted trans control similar to all the A's. All Dodge chassis after these had a column mounted shifter.

One more thing is that RIG to drill ALL those moulding clip holes (Prior to Bonderizing Dip AND Paint) hooked to the rain gutters in Body In White, Metal Shop. NO rain gutter to hook it to down the sides and rear on a Pickup gang. Shocked

That last part about the rain gutter mounting for the rig is very interesting Ter. Great info straight from the source!
