Anyone experienced their wipers working great then taking a break only to start again on their own later on?

    Mine does...

I just found this forum today and was reading posts when I came across this one about balky wipers.  My 63 E14 Van that I bought when I was 21 (I'm turning 65 next month) did this especially when the windshield was a little dry.  My problem turned out to be the wiper switch or more specifically the automatic circuit breaker inside the switch.  It seems that when the windshield is dry the motor pulls more current and a breaker that's a little too sensitive will cut out and then a minute or so later it cuts back on.   My van hasn't been driven in several years but I'm hoping this year since I've retired to get it back on the road.  I'll never part with it,  I brought my Daughter home from the hospital in it and she turns 40 this year,  my Grandson will inherit it...

Just met another vanner last night, shared a few cold ones and chatted over some Econoline issues. He had the same problem as mine with his wipers and he mentioned trying to move the key slightly in the ignition as the back of the dash has never been painted and corrosion arise along with a bunch of electrical monsters. In his case the wipers would quit at the same time as his heater fan. I'll have to give that a try when I put mine back on the road.

Bassham, that's cool to hear you kept your van all those years! Impressive!!! Mine turns off even with a very wet windshield and can take up to 30 minutes before coming back to life. I'll still check what you suggested looking at, thanks!

    Cheers

Sounds like it could be a bad ground. You will need to check the switch, wiper motor, battery and body ground. Make sure there isn't any corosion.
