Post by econopoor Thu Oct 02, 2014 6:27 pm

Sorry, I must have missed this one. It's another screwed up Ford deal. The vent on the tank is 5/8ths. The vent goes up to a tube mounted in the left rear corner. The tube is 1/2 inch. On 65-67 the hose has to go through a hole to connect to the tube. The hole is too small for 5/8ths hose to go through. So, You need to try and stretch 1/2 inch hose over the 5/8ths fitting to make it work properly. Ford used a special hose the was molded in different sizes on each end and those are no longer available. Don't use heater hose. It needs to be fuel line. Your truck being a 62 you can use 5/8ths and a clamp to tighten it down to a 1/2 inch tube.

    Hey, Duane.

The hole that the hose feeds through. If we wanted to use a 5/8" hose, can we open up that hole to fit the hose though?

Well the hole has a radius stamped into it so it doesn't chaff the hose when it goes thru. If you cut it oversize the be sure and put a grommet in it so the hose is protected.

I have a question about this very subject. I removed the tank on my 65 Econoline to flush out the tank and replace all the hoses. The vent hose is completely dried out and cracks in half if you try and twist it too much. So perfect time to replace it. There is the spot in the frame rail next to the tank where the vent tube passes through. Then it makes a turn and heads up past the filler pipe and up into that "box". The vent hose seems to turn right back around and head back out of that "box" through another hole and then back down next to the frame rail again. Since the original vent hose is so old and brittle I can grab one side and move it up and down and the other side of the tube where it comes out next to it moves along side with it. How can you replace that tube where it goes into that "box"? Am I missing something or need new glasses? It seems so simple on the surface but I don't want to screw myself.

On a 65 the hose goes up through the box, connects to a small 1/2 inch metal tube, makes a 180  degree U turn and goes back into another hose that goes back to the frame rail. Inside the van or pickup you can see this tube sticking up out of the box. You can cut the clamps off and push the hoses off the 180 and replace with new hoses and clamps.

Here's pictures from the 67 manual.

Anyone have a link or know of a place to order the 1/2" fuel vent hose? I want to make sure I get a solid hose that won't pinch over time. Nearby autoparts shops only seem to have heater hoses.

OReilly has bulk fuel hose in half inch, priced by the foot:
Gates Safety Stripe II - Fuel Line/PCV/EEC Hose, Part # 27006

You can also order hose from Summit: Part # DAC-93036

Yep. It's just a hose that connects to a simple tube that is clipped to the inner structure above the fuel filler.

I was hoping you would post a shot from the manual. By the way, does any body have the shop manuals posted online? I ve seen the brief repair manual over on yahoo.

Hey guys, I dropped my tank on my 65 e van today and I’m installing a new 22 gallon tank. I’ve read your thread and I’m trying to figure out what to do with mine. The hose is brittle and breaks easy. I can’t seem to get into that “box” in the rear left corner? Top seems to be welded shut. Where does the hose finally wind up and how important is it? What does it do? Dave

As mentioned above, you can buy new vent hose. On my '65, the vent hose loops up and back down, and ends in a hole in the frame rail in the area behind the driver side rear wheel. If the hole in the box has been welded shut, you can always drill a new one. The goal is to get the top of the loop about the same level as the gas cap.

Here's a pretty good discussion on why you need a vent for your tank. Fuel Tank venting.

Awesome, thanks for your quick response. How to I replace the whole line? What is at the end of the hose when it goes in the frame? My entire line is brittle and old

Nothing on the end of the hose. Just stick the end into the frame rail. Look at the pictures in this thread. Pretty simple project to replace, assuming your new tank has a vent tube on top like the original.

If you are not a purist, you can also use a barbed reducer 5/8" to 1/2".
Home depot has them in a hard plastic and I went for a barbed brass 5/8" x 1/2" reducer from E-Bay. The hose came from O'Reillys.
That way you can start out with the 5/8's hose towards the upper edge of the tank and then reduce down to the 1/2" hose. A couple of stainless clamps and an easy fix for $20.00.

Thanks guys, I’m doing the Fred Carrillo total replacement, have to modify the new 22g tank and I’ll be on my way. Just looking at that little box in the corner it seems like the lid is one piece and part of
The walls. Not sure how access the 180deg top turn.

Just replaced my tank the other day on my 61 with a modified 69 mustang tank, 20 gal.Used straps from a bronco, cut down, longer strap bolts and 5/8" vent hose. Went right through frame hole no problem. Attached to 1/2" tube with clamp. Don't know if the 1/2" tube just ends up there or if a hose is supposed to come back down to frame like the later models. Anybody know for a 61?
