Front Brake Line Adapters Empty Front Brake Line Adapters

Post by Guest Thu Sep 25, 2014 7:58 am

Have a 1964 G10 Panel. I have been replacing all of the brake lines, cylinders, shoes, etc. On the back of the front wheel cylinder there is a brass adapter block between the cylinder and the flexible hose. It uses a banjo bolt with copper washers at both ends of the block. I replaced the brass washers and reinstalled the adapter.

I can't get these connections to stop leaking! I have slowed down the dribble, but still unable to get a leak proof connection. What am I doing wrong? It's keeping me awake at night!

I've learned to try an not let van issues keep me awake anymore, they always work out...let it go, its not your health, only an old van....LOL Doni will know. I have a '64 too, I'll have a look. I haven't done my brakes yet but a PO did and although the lines look original, the hoses don't look that old and my mechanic said they looked fine....he's not the one crashing his van when they fail though!

Did go to NAPA and got a good match with the copper washers. Should not let this stuff get to me. Never was very good at plumbing.

It takes 3 washers,,,,,1 on the brake hose, 2 on the bolt,,,,,,maybe the hose or wheel cylinder is cracked,,,,,,,you could just test the hose by putting a normal nut and bolt with washers through the block and see if the hose/block assembly leaks,,,,,,

Both sides are leaking. Do have the 3 washers installed. New from NAPA. Cylinders are new as well as the hose. I will try the bolt idea to try and narrow down the problem. Thanks.

Note: When the new wheel cylinder box say :"Made in China," if does make me wonder it that is the issue.

Could be they did not tap the threads deep enough into the wheel cylinder,,,,,the bolt should be able to go about 1/8" deeper than the block,,,,,,look in the hole,,,,,there should not be a seat down in there,,,,,the banjo bolt is just a plain old fine threaded American bolt,,,,,,,

This probably is not the issue here, but really inspect the surfaces that the washers must seal on. Any line or dent can create a leak. I have normally run into this problem with remanufactured calipers caused by rough handling of the cores. But it is something that could apply and to be looked for.

Thanks to all of you for your help. Looks as if "donivan65" nailed it. Bought a couple of new cylinders from the local NAPA store. Installed cylinders were not tapped deep enough for the banjo bolt to fit snug. Looked and felt tight, but the bolt was bottoming out in the hole. After my happy dance is done, I will get the new ones installed.
Will let you know if all is well to continue on to another step in the restoration.

    Thanks again,
    Doug
