My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project Empty My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project

    Post by racer8432955 Sun Dec 15, 2013 7:00 pm

I did my intro in the general topics section:
    https://vintage-vans.forumotion.com/t37833-new-here-building-a-street-strip-e100-pickup

So now i'll start the thread on the build.
It a 1963 E100 tube chassis from the motor back. Narrowed Ford 9 inch, coil over / 4-link suspension. Setup for a sbf / c4 trans. It did have a lot of cool original bits such as the original falcon steering wheel with full horn ring (love it). So the end goal is a gasser style strip vehicle while keeping much of the original character these have.

I'll post pics as I go. Now I'm just tearing it down. First step is going to be rust repair, and fitting the salvage 302 / c4 in it for fitment purposes.

Pics from the day I brought it home:

Cool..I have many pictures of the different stages of my build that I would be happy to send you if needed. Also there are many things that come up at different stages that I have fought through, building the interior / dog house to keep the temperature down. Getting shocks long enough for the raised front end. Drive shaft length, mounts, ways to lift front, shifter
, gas linkage, frame boxing. I am sure the is much more I just can't think of now.

    Donn,
What headers did you end up using, the shorty block hugger types?
Probably going to fit the motor / trans in this weekend. Not that I'm anywhere near that far along, just want to foresee any problems with the custom chassis as that was contracted out by a previous owner.
And, yes at some point I would greatly appreciate your pics, especially of the drivetrain & front axle set up. If you have a photosharing account somewhere (i.e. photobucket) just pm me the link or something. Otherwise we can figure it out later.

    Thanks Again!

I am at my lake George house for a few days, with 14 inches of snow ..I will get you a bunch of pics when I get back home..
I did use short headers. Again when I get home I will check my receipts and get you the name and numbers on them.
Also a great source for custom parts, motor mounts and more is Vic (oldsckoll)? He is a member here. I know he had a bad accident a while ago and I have not seen him here for a while, but he is the man you need to talk to, he helped me alot..

The headers I used were 86-93 mustang for the 5.0 302 motor
They were cheap $99 I have a part number but not sure what company it was for 390297236314

    Post by racer8432955 Sun Dec 29, 2013 10:04 pm

Been busy with the holidays so not too much progress. I did however begin making the body mount outriggers that help tie the outer body to the tube chassis. Partially to strengthen it up long term, but also to keep it all in line when removing / fixing panels (i.e.- rockers). I am having tubing rolled to make a partial loop over the front wheel well that ties the rocker / a-pillar to the back part of the cab (behind the b-pillar). I'll take pics of that as well. All of this will also help serve as a outer mounting platform for seat and roll bar (inside cab). I gray pigeon crap looking stuff on the outrigger is weld-thru zinc primer..... I still have to finish with the floor removal from on top of the unibody rails.

I've got a couple pm's inquiring about the tube chassis / 4-link rear. Here's a couple more pics. Sorry the pics aren't the best, I was too lazy to in the house for the camera, and I'm one of the last persons in America without a smartphone / good camera on phone.

    Made some rust repair panels.

    cut out the blanks:
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P82A0707

cut out the mdf forming "tools" (using that term loosely...):
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P82A0708

sandwich the blank between two tools and clamp tight:
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P82A0709

work the area you want formed over:
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P82A0710

drill your spot weld holes, and primer seal up the backside:
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P82A0711

sprayed the spots to be welded with a weld-thru primer. will seam seal the lapped joints when time comes:
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P82A0712

I find this kind of work enjoyable. not that I'm any good at it, but still fun...

some progress, and of course some set backs... its been 400deg below here in the Midwest so I've been hesitant to heat up the shop unless I can get in a good few hrs of work time.

put a junk 302 & c4 to just check fit. I've never put a motor in thru a door jamb before, its kinda different:
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P82A0726

headers are too close to the starter on passenger side, and hit the motor mount on drivers side. nothing a little moding couldn't fix. but, it would be easier to just buy. anyone know of a specific model that fits the v8 conversions? I would think it would look a little more like my drawing (see red lines)?
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project Headers-mod-path

my c4 has the long tail housing. Seems as though you need the short housing otherwise driveshaft pinion angle will be too great, correct?
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P1050209

got some work done on the tube chassis. these bars will be part of the structure that connects front step / lwr a pillar to the tube chassis. (not in their final postion in photo) bending tube is fun! these will also serve as part of the structure to mount seat supports and shock absorber to. I'll roll new wheel wells at work.

My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project P82A0725

worst part is my rockers  / frt fender / frt wheel arch is shot, beyond reasonable repair. So I'm going to need new (used) better ones,  especially the drivers side. I posted in the wanted section, but think I will need to buy a whole parts truck. that's ok. If anyone has a lead please advise.

    Thanks for looking.

tacked back in the exterior (other side needs exterior work too, see next)
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project 2014-03-09131042

made a couple tools to form the body line.

    welded it in.

next will be the lower body panels around the bed.
My 63 Street - Strip Pickup project Qtr-out

Looking back on a sheet metal forming post previous to this, let me add... by no means do my posts imply 'this is the way to do it', or 'I'm the man'. far from it. sorry if it seemed that way.  I'm just cugging along and having fun!

    Cheers!

Those who mentioned, in another thread, that the seams on replacement panels have some alignment issues weren't kidding. Looks like its going to be a little more metal work and welded seams.

I filled in the gas cap hole because I will be running a fuel cell.
