Need help 250 6 cyl Empty Need help 250 6 cyl

Post by gkpost Wed Dec 04, 2013 3:56 pm

I have a rebuilt 250 chevy 6 cyl made 73-78. I put a new harmonic balancer with two grooves for the fan belts. Neither pulley I have lines up correctly. I understand that there are different water pumps, the one I have on the motor is 4 inch.
Any help, Thank you ~ GK.

The balancer should be about 1/8" away from the oil pan,,,,,,does the alternator pulley line up with the waterpump pulley and balancer,,,,,,3 7/8" waterpump sounds normal to me,,,,,,there are 4 3/8",,,,,,,however,,,,lots of different pulleys for it,,,,,,,,

The waterpump looks like it measures 4", I have a old waterpump off a junk motor it's 4 1/4".
neither of these work with the alternator. I'm thinking the balancer may not be all the way on. I only need it to go on another 1/8 inch. The crank is flush with the balancer, is that correct ?
    Thanks `GK.

So nothing is real,,,,,,,the engine, waterpump, balancer and alternator bracket are from different places,,,,,Is it the right alternator bracket and balancer,,,,,,I would say the balancer has to be about 1/8" from hitting the oil pan when you look underneath,,,,,,the waterpump measurement should be from before the gasket on the flange, to where the fan sits on the flange,,,,,out of the 3 pulleys, do any match up,,,,,is one out of alignment,,,,,,these things don't exactly have to be perfect to work.......

Another thing,,,,,,if you got both engines,,,check where the holes in the block where the alternator bracket bolts on,,,,,,,they might not be in the same place which can move the alternator,,,,,,,

Sorry about the late reply, life gets in the way. So the cure I used is I pulled the collar 1/8 inch forward on the water pump shaft. Now everything is lined up and on to the next problem, There are plenty but I'm getting closer.
    Thanks as always ~ GK.
