Van dash/radio
Just curious on my 62 the dash has kinda been molested where there was a radio. I seen other pics where I don't see radios. My question is was there a radio in all or option? What should it look like between the ash tray and the vent?

Re: Van dash/radio
Most did not have a radio, and thus had a solid dash between the ash tray and the speaker opening. In 1965, the heater controls were added to this region.

Re: Van dash/radio
The large cutout is not stock, and was cut to fit a later radio. The holes to the side of the big hole might be from the original radio, or they might have been added later.
My guess is that more Falcons came with a radio than vans and pickups. I have 10 Econolines, no Falcons, and none appear to have come with a radio.

Re: Van dash/radio
I spoke too soon. I have a 1967 SuperVan with a deluxe interior that had the factory radio. It's the red van in the bottom right of my avatar.
Here is a pic of the dash area. These are the five factory radio holes. The speaker was mounted behind the grill to the right of the radio, so that adds four more holes.
On your photo, notice the two round holes with the tiny holes next to them. (Compare with my photo.) Those look like the original factory radio holes. So my best guess is that your van had a factory radio.

Another clue is the four holes around the speaker grill. Those were used to mount the speaker. Non radio trucks didn't have those drilled.

Re: Van dash/radio
Well anyone got a pic of what the radio looks like in one. Wonder if it would be possible to buy a dash or at least the piece to weld in.

Re: Van dash/radio
Nice Dash Pic of the original radio cutouts Barnabas. I saw a AM radio on ebay but passed on it because it was pretty expensive, $200. But it looks like it would have fit right in there including the rounded ends.
Anyway, is the knob on the left above the radio cutout a cigarette lighter? I was wondering because in my '63 I have this thing on the heater that looks like an empty cigarette lighter holder. Has anyone seen one mounted like this before or is this something rigged up?
Btw Trado, did you ever get your dash fixed the way you wanted it?

No unfortunately not yet. My "winter project" time turned into redoing the basement for my son and his girlfriend when they graduate college at the end of the month. But I started on the van last night. I pulled the seats cause the neighbor lady is redoing them. So hey it's progress

That push button likely washer pump actuator ... pump was added on ... it's likely on or near the bulkhead where the control rods go through under the driver

Oh yeah, duh. Is that the right place for the lighter it seems kind of crammed in there.

I agree. I'd like to know the proper location of the lighter as well. Mine doesn't have one. I got a pretty stock looking replacement from summit, Scott Drake brand.

Re: Van dash/radio
What they used to do when they installed electric WW pump was just put button in lighter hole ... the foot pump near the high beam floor switch was then eliminated ... with the pump installed at the bulkhead where the control rods feed through ...

Re: Van dash/radio
The lighter goes below the wiper switch. The light switch lines up horizontally with the wiper switch, and the lighter lines up horizontally with the ignition switch. None of mine have one, but I have seen them.

Right there below the wiper switch is where I have found all of the factory cigar lighters.

Re: Van dash/radio
Here is page 6 from the 1961 owners manual. That's the cigar lighter under the wiper switch to the left of the ash tray.
The extra knob over the radio is for the auxiliary heater that goes in the back of the van. I've never seen one of those in person.

Re: Van dash/radio
The lighter actually went where that push button is now. Some one has added some things and I have never seen a lighter socket in that position. The warning light and the switch/knob next to it may also be an added E brake switch that someone also has installed into the dash?? I am guessing that this dash is from a 65 to 66???
