trans cables (?) Empty trans cables (?)

Post by hemicop Sat Jan 19, 2013 11:34 am

Well, my A100 truck project is coming along-slowly but surly.I've got the engiine (360) & trans in, brakes rebuilt, gastank redone & installed & I'll be taking it to my buddies shop real soon to get the electrical stuff completely redone BUT I have one huge (IMO) problem---- the trans for this thing apparently uses 2 cables, one goes to the inside (?!?!) of the trans, the other to the rear. I'm told the rear cable is for the parking park. It's a 727, pre '65 or '66 I'm told & the cables are hard, if not impossible to find. Anyone have or know where I can get these "rare" animals? PLEASE E-mail ASAP if you can help, I'd like to get this done by Spring.......

try looking on net for marine type cables-can be had in any lenght too & come in plain steel inside or stainless also. Summitt also may have -also all types of end hookups are available too.

The twin cables (push button shifter) were used up to 65, IIRC.

There is no reason to use this in a van since NONE came with pushbuttons and getting cable that reach the extra distance will be custom =$$$.
Get a correct linkage shift trans. If this one has the short tail, swap the output shaft and housing into a later transmission.

just be careful here. the govoners are exactly the same shape size and attach in the same fashon,BUT there are differences between the 60's 727 automatic and later versions, mid 70's and 80's. a very close inspection of the tailshaft is needed and case as well. the differences are minute BUT there are differences. i had 3 govoners and a couple valve bodies before i got it right. and what was it, use only the tailshaft if the holes drilled in it are the same and rear tailshaft housing only. use the gov from whatever valve body you are using. the springs, weights, and pressures for kickdown are NOT the same and it will affect downshift and kickdown. another t-shirt i have that i learned about the hard way.

jkr, I agree that you better know what's what when you start swapping parts. Lotsa changes over the years, and many are NOT compatible!

and if you really want to frankentrans one together remember this, the 727 was used a lot by A.M.C. . the front of the case is different but the internals are really close again. i had one on the floor for a while till i got it figured out though. the short tailshaft is the same though... not the tailshaft housing.

ok........ i believe you. i am by no means an expert but of all my dealings with a-series vehicles i have never seen a 2 cable automatic in one. but i guess the oldest one i owned was a 65 so thats what i based my knowledge on. i really would like to see something that shows it though. a parts book i have access to never showed a dual cable shifter setup.
but then again not many of you guys have seen a dutch door setup on a a-series pickup either i'll bet.

and the time i saw this it shows all factory spot welds and a factory option that has no record in any parts book.a chrysler parts depo manager for 30 years never saw it either. mother chrysler did thing i bet it doesn't remember doing...

I need to apologize for jumping to conclusions from my own limited experience on these early vans. I have not seen any dual cable or single cable shifters because I haven't messed with any 1964 or 1965 vans. I have gone back and edited my posts and hope that the original poster can forgive me for bad info. dix is right, there is no way that they used the lever shift trannys in these earlier vans, only to bring them out across the board 2 years later for the rest of the cars and trucks.

I would suggest trying to find the cables from a vintage parts dealer like Robert's Motor Parts or others that may have the correct cables. In fact, here is one source!
