Re: pointless ignition
i have 3 of these units in chevys- had only one go bad after long use - trick to these is to follow mallorys install instructions- many dont follow them & the trigger/ module will burn out. always disconnect the vehicles battery before charging also.

Stock Mopar EI is great,

and

but you should switch to EI voltage regulator too. That is a wiring hassle in the vans due to the alt and regulator locations

All the stuff can be sourced from the JY.
It would be a good time to do the amp gauge bypass.

A lot of people have had good luck with the pertronix

I would not rely on some of the older brands without feedback. Many have been de-contented and built offshore and are NOT the same stuff that worked in the 70s and 80s.

Re: pointless ignition
I will agree with rod also on the dodge stuff=yet = i still have a "Hays electronic conversion in my corvette since 1972-they were the 1st out with this stuff - been bullittproof. I do believe mallory bought them & their patents out years back. The pertronix ive used- seems good also -yet i have read some posts in places that they do go out more frequently on our vans due to heat in the dH being a problem.

Re: pointless ignition
I tried wiring up a Mopar EI in a /6 and had a heck of time trying to get it to run good, never happened. I stuffed a Pertronix in it and have never looked back. I also have one in a 383 as well. I don't know why anybody would still want to dick around with points, they just suck!

Re: pointless ignition
HaHa- well im old skl type. Ive got the electroniv stuff I mentioned earlier - yet i still use in most of my chevys a point type mallory distributor. Always ill add =dual points with the heavy duty point sets.Reason being - ive been thru all the GM electronic Dist -since they came out . Been on trips that when they went out -it was a guessing game =whats wrong with them. Couldnt fine even long ago parts places that had parts for them or only stocked 1-2 parts for them. When a set of points gets bad I can tell - even if they died on the road -i could always find something to scrape the burned ares off a set & guess @ a gap & they would work long enough to get me home -to work & back & to a parts store- chev points, mallory points -sure we got em - how many sets do you want .?? I( do like the ease of usually never worrying about distributor problems with the electronics -yet most times ive never seen any street motors needing 70,000 volts or turning 7000rPM-esp. in our vans we depend on daily =just old skl thinking after many on the road problems with the electronic GM stuff. By the way - next time the battery is dead & you forgot & left that ignition key on & jumpstarteed it / hooked cables up wrong -guess what gets damaged?/ not them old points!

I have a Crane Cams optical unit in mine. My dad got it back in the early 90s though.

Re: pointless ignition
i'm with you twinpilot, i guess i'm old school to, i think i'll stay with the points, in the long ago past, lol i used a book of matches the cover was just about the same size as a feller gauge size 18, and i kept my old cars running just fine, since i have the dog box off and have a new set of points i was thinking about my old chevelle with the mallory conversion i put in it, and thats why i posted this to find out whats new on the market for these old vans ignition,
