Re: THE CANADIANS
I think I'm closer to San Diego than I am to JKR... but I'll bring the beer if I ever make it to San Diego!
You know, I feel fortunate that over my life I have travelled by car from the Canadian Pacific to the Canadian Atlantic... this is a very scenic country. I wish I could just snap my fingers and be in PEI... beautiful and soothing... ideal place to savour a cold beer in the summer sun! Hopefully soon, I'll have my Econoline fit to do that trip and several others into the states in style!

Re: THE CANADIANS
I know! Totally! I'd have to drive through Ottawa to get to the Maritimes... Maybe I'll get to VanFest in a couple years which is in your neck of the woods! And hopefully we'll get a Rocky Mountain campout going as a regular August long weekend thing if we can pull it off this year... that would be a pretty good reason to drive out here!

Re: THE CANADIANS
Well according to google maps it is 6,057 km – about 2 days 10 hours. I am assuming that would be driving 24hrs a day. It also has me traveling mostly through the States to get there. Interesting.

We've gotta do a convoy... I bet travelling in a group 8 hours a day would be very restful, a lot of fun camping out each night, no mechanical worries of breaking down all alone with our vintage rides...

Re: THE CANADIANS
it is a great drive across canada. went from little pei to the foothills of calgary alberta in 1981 all by myself in the car. had everything i owned with me so no room for anybody to travel with. when i flew home i left that car at the airport with the keys in it so check for a 1971 sattelite sebring plus if your by. its two tone blue. i spend my time in the winter grooming snowmobile trails on pei and enjoy the view out the windshield. you get to see alot at a blood curdling 6 mph for 14 -16 hours a trip. i would not want to take my bombadier across canada at that speed. probably take all year. i could be in enbro's home town in about 12 hours and saski's in about 3 days. still thinkin about going to moparfest and possibly woodward in detriot this summer ( same weekend ).

Re: THE CANADIANS
Tell me what it's like to take a road trip in Canada. Enbro got a good taste of American hospitality, Rest stops, where you can park overnight every 50 miles, Truckstops where you can get the internet and showers. So if a person wanted to go from Vancouver Island across to PEI, driving 400 miles a day, Is there places to pull over for the night or would you have to find a campground or Motel. And I take it there is no one major freeway all the way across.

Re: THE CANADIANS
There is a set of highways called the "Trans-Canada Highway"... I know. Basically, there is a main route that leads through every major Canadian city. There's kind of two branches of the Trans-Canada in the west, with the second one called the Yellowhead. The main difference between Canada and the States, for westerners at least, is that cities are generally spaced about 4-8 hours apart, with wilderness or farmland in the middle. The towns in between rarely have services. The good part is that the highways in the west are pretty open, not bumper-to-bumper.

Re: THE CANADIANS
you can cross this country from coast to coast and not have any worries about fuel, a place to sleep, or a needed repair. the trans canada highway ( tch 1 ) runs clear across it and lots of other routes parrallel it. theres lots to see and lots to do and it's NOT all snow and ice. from vancouver island on the west coast to newfoundland on the east theres lots here. the rocky mountains are a trip in themselves with scenery, wildlife, hell you can go on a glacier for a drive. the flatlands of alberta thru saskatchawn to manitoba is cool cause thats where you can watch the start of one day to the east and look west and its still dark as nite.
theres two routes to take across northern ontario and thats where you will see the worlds biggest trout and the largest canadian nickle. after those roads you travel southerly toward our nations capital ottawa. thats where enbro (neil) lives. after that you head to the unique part of canada with its french culture in quebec. montreal is kinda like a french vegas, it never sleeps and theres always something to do at any hour of the day or nite. after quebec is the maritimes consisting of new brunswick nova scotia newfoundland-labrador and little old pei. i'm farily biased to this area of canada because i was "bred, born, and raised here". moved away twice and the draw of the fresh sea air and the laid back lifestyle kept pulling me back. the warmest red sand beaches north of florida in the summer time PERIOD. this red sandbar is only 140 miles long and about 35 wide at its widest but i wouldn't give it up for anything or any place else. i looked at british coulmbia from the rockies at jasper and stepped foot in all but our teritories and newfoundland but i am determined to do it before i die.
don't be shy come see for yourself and look me up if you come this way we will get together and i'll show you around this area. in moncton new brunswick july 8- 12 they have the largest car show east of toronto ontario and north of boston in this area with about 1800 - 2000 street rods, antiques, and special intrest vehicles.

Re: THE CANADIANS
Thats a good description of a Canada Road trip. But what is the general rule for stopping and sleeping in your van at night. Do they allow it or will they hassle you and make you check into a campground or motel just for a few hours sleep?
The world keeps getting smaller and you can go see it if you want. And it's good to see where everybody lives and how they live. But you got to find the time and money to do it. And do it before it's too late. I like to have a plan when I hit the road, I print out the gas prices across the country before I go and when I get up in the morning, I check the Travel Guide that tells me whats up at the next exit. So I can make my plans where I will stop and what I will do and see. And it's really good if I find a Vanner on the way,,,,I found 3 so far,,,,,

Re: THE CANADIANS
in the urban areas around cities like vancouver, calgary, toronto or montreal you might get a hassel from the "mounties" but outside that pull of the side of the road on a lane into some field or into the trees no problem. i parked well off the road one nite while travelling between ontario and pei and the cops knocked on the window and asked if i was ok. he thought i crashed the van but they were good and left me snooze. but there are lots of rest areas and service centers closer to urban centers if you don't mind traffic coming and going all nite. and another thing, i've never packed a firearm and don't plan on it or think i'll need one in canada but people can't cross the border with one in thier vehicles even if its registered in thier name either way. i know charlton heston and his right to own guns thing is big in the u.s. but........i saw people walking around in daytona in 2005 at the 500 cup race and saw a few gun butts.recieved a pellet from a shotgun in the ankle and a 22 missed by a few feet but my worst was in calgary when someone shot the glass above me in a train station. ran for two miles and never looked back and left town three days later.havent left pei for anywhere else since and don't plan on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: THE CANADIANS
Totally off topic, but to follow the thread...
We use Ramsets to fasten our storefront frames in place. They use a .25 cal load to fire nails into the steel lentils. In the 'burbs people just look around when we fire them. In the hood (where they display "Don't shoot, I want to grow up" bumper stickers) - everyone ducks. Then they yell at you.

JKR, you are bang-on with your description... except I've never been shot at in Calgary, during Stampede or any other time (although there may have been a couple jealous cowboys when I became legal age... who may have had some nasty intentions towards me )
Close to the cities, there are municipal campgrounds. But truck stops and rest areas are abundant. I slept at a truck stop when I towed the Ford home... woke up, had a hot breakfast and gassed up right there! It's easy to find campgrounds too... marked on the highway on a brown sign with a tent or picnic table on it. Pretty easy!

two of the three were ( i think ) intended to be warnings but the calgary think rattled me . the police were looking for people the next day who were seen running from the area where vandals broke some of the glass roof panels.i forgot alot of things but none of these details..
