Reverse Light Switch Empty Reverse Light Switch

Post by ScottyJones Mon Jul 23, 2012 7:27 pm

I have reverse lights installed on my first gen (not original obviously, but they look like they could have been). Right now, whoever installed them just wired them to a manual switch next to the hazard light switch.

What would you suggest I do to get them working with the gear selector? My neutral safety switch is not connected, so that is an option, but there is no connecting rod on it. Can I just make one out some wire or something?

    Any ideas?

depends on what tranny. on original nos switch just sold on ebay for $45.00. most trannys have reverse switches built in. i am guessing that didnt exist back then? before i spent that much for a switch, i would just buy a magnetic reed switch and magnet. i have a newer trans but went with a toggle anyways because i like the option of turning it on whenever i want. mainly for camping but i am still waiting for someone to ride my a$$ with their highbeams.

Thats actually a good idea…I could even just leave the toggle switch on there too to operate it manually if I need to. Thanks!

i am thinking of running both. toggle and switch for reverse. i have 2 driving lights below my rear bumper and are as bright as my headlights.

This is what a safety neutral switch looks like,,,,,it bolts to the transmission and has a rod hooked to the selector lever on the trans,,,,if it has 4 wires on it, it also is a back up light switch,,,,

It's only got two wires on it. I probably should think about getting it wired up for a neutral safety switch anyways. But I guess I could rig somethin else up for the reverse lights...

If you notice 2 glowing lights on the mountain east of you, that's just Vanish backing up his Blue No Door

Scott, I wanted so bad to help your van's previous owner to hook up that backup light switch because it seemed like the only thing that was wrong with the van when I first looked at it!

You're right, it is really good to have both a neutral safety switch and backup lights. And what do you know, here's a switch for a 1966 (that came with backup lights) that does both!

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1966-1970-Chevrolet-GMC-Van-NOS-neutral-safety-switch-1993359-/150882956023?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item23215332f7&vxp=mtr

A bit more reasonable than that other one on eBay. Hurry up, though, the auction ends Sunday.

Don set me up with a set of the same backup lights. That's a good spot to mount them, pretty much out of sight.

BTW, that neutral safety switch on eBay sold for $108.49! Scott, be glad your van came with one. Just gotta hook the thing up!
