my 64 GMC camper Empty my 64 GMC camper

    Post by syborg1964 Wed May 23, 2012 2:35 pm

My camper is a 1964 GMC. Have had it a few years now long enough to replace the brakes, engine well half of it and some of the wood paneling in the back. All of the wood work was done prior to buying it. Was an eBay find, had been looking for an old GMC or Chevy van since almost buying one when I was eighteen twenty plus years ago. Parched a Chevy luv instead and outfitted it with a cap over the bed and placed a futon bed in the back and was ready at a moment’s notice to camp. But there was alwase a van in the back of my mind just had to wait till the right time to find it.
This is my third GMC van. But the only one that still have. It’s set up in three sections the drivers area, also doubles as the dining room, and a good place to stay warm in the winter since the engine is just between the seats. The second area separated by a curtin from the front is the living area complete with vanity mirror and cabinets and when I camp it also doubles as a bathroom. At 2am on a camping trip sure is biter than finding a tree in the dark. The third area is the bed in the back, I am only 5-9 and can fit diagonally, tease my new wife I married her because she was shorter than I was and would fit in my van. After all the time and money spent on her; Van not new wife, have only spent been camping with her once. The week end before my wedding, and did stay in her while family was in town for my wedding. My own bed and private bathroom vs. house full of relatives. For what I have spent in repairs and maintenance for the fore nights I have slept in the back, not counting the times I have fallen asleep while napping in the back during lunch, it’s been the most expensive camper I have ever been in but she is worth it.

She has been my daily driver for the last two months, but sadly its time to switch to a vehicle that has ac. Memphis is just to hot and humid in summer time. Need to start saving for an ac. there is a fan in the back but its up front while driving that get a little hot.

i went a few yrs ago , it was pretty cool .now , as a young christian , it was a little concern that it is basically set up at one of louisvilles largest bars the Phoenix hill bar . but i will be able to have tracts on Jesus Christ to lay on seat to give out. maybe share the Gospel with someone . people do bring their families , its like 3 0r 4 parking lots around bar and 2 streets partially blocked off, so you dont have to go into the bar .they have vendors including pin stripers.

will need to get some body work and painting done before I am ready for a pin stripers. like the flyers that are passed out at the shows. one way to find out what is going on in the community.

still drive van as much as i can. its winter now so having a warm engine between the seats is a plus. just don't drive it in the rain.

I'm really digging the setup in your van. I've planning on doing a similar setup. Until I saw you pictures I was kind of using this one as a guideline.

But this one is a 3rd Gen. or later and I probably won't store the spare in the middle of the living-room.

    Is the Fridge electric?

the fridge is just an icebox. Usually put a few frozen water bottles in when i need it cold. works out great during summer car shows.
the lay out must have been kind of kit or plans, publish some where, looks similar to the way mine is set up. but my spare is under the bed in the back. but there is a been bag in the middle.
may need to add some shag carpet to mine.
