Sandblasting & Primer Empty Sandblasting & Primer

    Post by retro-vanner Sun Apr 22, 2012 6:32 pm

    Hey Everyone,

I have the garage ready and will be towing my van in this week. I already have a long list of things to do beginning with the collapsed roof.

I will have to do a LOT of sandblasting and I think it is going to take awhile. I was considering doing it in sections and then priming the area before moving on. Is this how most people do it?

    Thanks,
    J.

I sure hope so...cus that's how I was going to do it...lol. But then again I don't have a garage, and have to work out side in the elements. So I need to prime as I go.

Just keep in mind that if you use a two part primer sealer(recomended) you will need special breathing protection. If you use a fast dry lacquer primer and don't seal it with paint within a few weeks it will soak in water ,if left out in the weather, and rust your paint off from below, later.
I have ruined prep work more times than I want to admit because I don't have a place to keep my stuff under cover.

Ive seen on other hot rods site guys swear by bring down to bare metal and this using a epoxy primer. this way you can drive around until you have the time/money to paint. Have not done this myself, just what ive read.

You can do a section and then use an epoxy primer over the bare metal, do the next section and then so on until you are done. Just make sure you do use an epoxy primer.

I am planning to blast indoors, but I am going to build a support structure and cover it with Visqueen. I will do all of my sandblasting and priming within the 'tent'.
