REAR END ID? Empty REAR END ID?

Post by DanTheVanMan Sat Dec 20, 2008 12:08 pm

Anyone know how to ID the rear axle? Is there ID or a Ser. or Stock # anywhere? scratch

I have read this complete thread:
    https://vintage-vans.forumotion.com/between-the-seats-g-f17/noisy-rear-axle-t1994.htm?highlight=rear+end

It was very helpful but need to know where or how to look to find the gear ratio and axle size so I get the right replcement bearings. Any help would be great. Thanks, Dan

Rotate the gears, watching the ring gear, the ratio is stamped in the edge of the ring gear. I don't think there was more than one axle size on the first gen vans, the third member I'm running in my 64 came right out of my 69.

The 1st Gens came with 3 different gear ratios,,,,3:36, 3:73 and 4:10. On the ring gear , right after the GM part#, the teeth number of the pinion and ring are stamped,,,,,,most common rear end will say 11 37,,,,,,divide them in to each other and you get a 3:36 in this case.

Yip, forgot about the math, it's been a while. Thanks Don.

Looks good Dan! Mine howled like mad at 45MPH, ring gear was badly worn.

So there is like 5 ways to tell what gear ratio you got. They came with a tag under 1 bolt and there was a decal listing what equipment came on the van. But those are probably long gone. There is also a code stamped under the rear brake hose like these 2 that identifies what rear end you have. And these rear ends also came in a PosiTraction version,,,,,

All back together. New trans output seal, both U-joints, Pinion seal, all bearing and wheel seals, brake cylinders and pads....

10 Mile test drive and it feels much better and sooo much quieter!!!
