    Hey Guys,

    Now it's down to the nuts and bolts. Thanks to Duane in TN I was able for get my VIN decoded and here's what I've got:

    E16 = Econoline van series, extended body
    A = 240 engine
    H = Lorain Ohio assembly plant
    A19378 = September 1966 serial number - 1967 model
    90 = wheelbase
    L = Holly Green paint
    E162 = Econoline van model, extended body, 1 ton (heavy duty)
    3 = green standard interior
    89 = van body style
    C = 3 speed transmission
    07 = 3.00:1 heavy duty axle (9 inch)
    4930 = 1 ton GVW rating
    129 at 4000 = certified net HP at RPM
    16 = Philadelphia sales district

    Not to happy with the 3-on-the-tree, so that will probably go. Maybe a four speed manual, but would probably be happier with a C-6. However, I know someone that is trying to sell a 6-speed AOD from a Navigator(?) and it is something to consider. Anyone done that yet?

    As for engines, I can get a straight 300 and I know that is a drop-in, but I am leaning towards a 302 or 351. However, there is that insistent desire to build a real ground pounder and cram a 429 interceptor engine in the box. Please, someone talk me out of that... I am begging you.

    As for the rear end, I have the HD 9-inch rear. I guess I'll need to change out the gearing... ideas?

    Has anyone bagged one of these rigs? Just for ride quality, not for slamming to the ground.

    Has anyone added power steering? is it possible? I was thinking about the running gear from an F-150 or a later E van for the power steering... that would also solve my what to do with the shifting column since I might go with an automatic.

    Thanks for the ideas and encouragement.

    Later,
    J.

    Cut it up however you want. Its your van. Now a 429 is an nice option as long as you know how to build it.

    My girl is hoping that someone would be the voice of sanity. I was just on the O'Reilly's website scoping out pistons for a 429... 10.5:1 sounds nice.

    Yipee! I just got a call and found out that I have access to a junkyard full of parts for old, wrecked trucks and vans.

    Getting pistons for a 429 ain't easy, but there's always Summit. 9.5:1 is more manageable, doable, and safer.

    I will be the voice of reason... these things are tricky to handle. Weight distribution in a cabover is odd. First, get it stable to drive before you drop a big honkin engine in it. You can get a 302 in with minimal mods. enjoy the van for a bit!

    Good job finding a parts yard... priceless!

    That van will need a lot of work, but it will be sooo satisfying! The real joy is in driving it, so get it on the road first and replace worn suspension, steering, brakes, etc.

    Heavy duty model... you will have a Ford 9" in there, so when you do drop in a big engine, your axle will handle it!
