Got the head off the 240 today and found a giant hole in the front cylinder of the block,( piston laying in it at an angle), so it is indeed time for a swap. Now the question is which way do I go, another 240, find a 300 or go V8? I have a buddy with what we think is a 75 model 300 complete that is clean and spins over freely. Casting numbers on the block are (D5TE 6015 AA). Can any of you verify what it is? If it's a 75, 300 block, I can get my 240 head redone and put it on that block and get a raise in compression, right? Will all my 240 external components fit on the 300? Will a 300 bolt up to my stock 3 speed tranny?
Feel free to jump in with any opinions or info you may have. Wanna get this show on the road ASAP! Gonna go ahead and pull the rest of the engine out since "SHE'S SHOT".

I would also do a V8 swap but i guess it just depends if you want power or a gas saver.

If you can get the 300 I would go with that. If you want to modify the dog house, make new motor mounts, change the trans mission, have a new drive shaft made, and change a bunch of wiring,( these are things you may need to consider) then go the v-8....that's what I did, but that's just being me...lol, and I need to be different, being a drummer and all.

get the 300!!! its a bolt in swap, less work and no hidden expenses, mounts, brackets, exhaust etc. same as your 240, just better. plenty of performance parts if you wanted to go that route. i will check on head/compression. last 300 i hopped up was in the late '80's

The 300 will be easier. I suppose you won't quite get the speed of a v8, and you'll get about the same mpg, but it's a simple swap. For a 289/302, you're going to need to either modify the dogbox or buy modified headers, and you might need to upgrade your radiator and the crossmember, and so on, but as far as swaps go, it's pretty easy. You have access to a 300 and a 289, and both will bolt up to your trans, cables, etc and plenty of performance parts are available for both, so the question is: How soon do you want to be on the road?

Definitely go with the 300. Talk to Vanishingbreed about Clifford Performance. You can build a 300 to get right about 300 horsepower. Less weight and its just as fast as a V-8. I mean how fast do you want to go in one of these things anyway. Anything above 65 mph just ain't safe. Plus you will have less issues, especially cooling issues.

I went back and forth on the 300/302 debate for a while. but at the end of the day, the 300 has more torque than the 302 and gets better MPG. I really wanted the v8, but there was no way to rationalize the extra cost and effort. in the end I bought a a100 w/ a v8 already installed… and I have a ford 300 ci on a pallet.

checked on the head, 240 is only 8cc less but you can mill 60 thousands off. few things i did find was 1.94 valves and some porting really wake it up. headers and more fuel, 2, 4 or a couple singles, and that chevy 292 rockers will fit, 1.72:1 ratio, so valve lift is increased and stock cam is good with this combo. this is all info i found internet surfing, not from experience.
