Headlights flashing off and on Empty Headlights flashing off and on

Post by Magic Bus Wed Oct 26, 2011 5:11 pm

Last night on a short drive, when on high beam the 61 econo's headlights were flashing off and on.. I switched to low beam and they were fine, went back to high beam and they would flash off and on...dimmer switch maybe?

I realize it could be a wiring gremlin just looking for suggestions?

It could be a short in the high beam wires and it is triping the circut breaker. When the breaker cools it will come back on for a short time and then trip again.

I kinda had that same problem on my 73 ford truck. Turned out to be a corroded wire on the high beam / low beam switch on the floor. The bad connection was causing the light switch to overheat and making it cut out. When I removed the flloor switch, all the wires kinda fell off. Switch was rotton. Replaced it and all was good again...just my 2 cents...and not sure if our early set up is wired the same or not.

Its common on older vehicles for the circuit breaker in the headlight switch to not hanle as much current as they get older. Especialy if you have upgraded your headlights. The best fix is to install relays. That will take the load away from the headlight switch, and make your headlights brighter.

My 67 did the same, and a new headlight switch took care of that problem.

I had the same issue. Replaced the dimmer switch on the floor and all was good...
