Now that I have found this forum, this itch that I have, to find and own an early van is getting worse. I can hold off til I find the right one for me (prefer 1st gen. chevy, east of the mississippi ) but I need to quench this thirst with reading material.
What are some books or magazines that you all recommend ?

You know, I've gotten no info from print media on earlies... just on the internet!

There is a group I don't belong to (I don't own a vintage Chevy YET), but the Vintage Chevy Van Club VCVC is somewhere you must be online.

You need to be here at VintAGE-Vans, and you need to research the market on Craigslist, Kijiji (NYC's listings suck right now, but they're huge in Canada), eBay... look at prices and conditions of vans that pop up!

If members here are selling, they tend to be picky about who buys them... they don't want it stripped to be a work truck, because it's for vannin and we're proud of our vans! So people tend to have positive experiences when they buy within the community.

You've already made up your mind you want a first gen Chev, and it will be easy! You'll own one very soon. All the candidates will range from barely breathing to fully restored. I've got two barely breathing earlies... a Ford I paid $700 CAD for, and a Fargo A100 I paid $50 CAD for, both probably in the same condition, but I was a bit more frugal and less emotional when I made the offer on the Fargo.

I give it a couple weeks before your jones gets the better of you! Laughing

Welcome aboard Mike. Just remember while your looking that the right van will probably find you. There is usually a steady listing of vans for sale and thanks to G-man and Vanish most everything out there gets listed here on the site under the A's, G's , or E's for sale. As far as reading material there's not a whole lot out there about the early's that I know of. If you haven't found it yet there is another site that is devoted to the early chevy's ,(Vintage Chevy Van Club) VCVC.org . A lot of the people here are also members there. A great bunch of people on both sites and everyone is really helpful. Between the two sites there should be enough reading and pic's to keep you busy and fuel the fire for an early. If you have any questions just ask, someone will help.

If a picture is worth a thousand words then this site and vcvc site will provide you volumes of information.

I know you really want to get one right away, but the first one you find may not be the one for you. My advice being a east coaster you should look for a early that need little or no body work. You may pay more now, but it will be less later. I will agree the vcvc site is a great site also, but to me life is full of differant favors and thats why I like it here. You can learn just as much about fixing things on your Chevy from the Ford & Dodge guys because even though they are a differant brand all early's are alot alike.

I agree ,I am not in a rush and the right one will come along.
I looked at one over the weekend that was on ebay last week 20 mins.from my house.I was there 5 min than left.Being it was what I was looking for I expected to buy it til I saw it and the worst part was what this guy thought it was worth.
Thanks again for the warm welcome

ditto on all advise especially what gman says about the body - the search function here and at vcvc will answer a lot of questions - and when you find your van a factory manual will help - oo3

Hate to say it but I did get all my manuals on "FeeBay".
And the rest I either got from internet searches or folks here or the vcvc site. The amount of knowledge here is truly amazazing!!!
