k im building a 318 and wanting to hypo it out! im hoping to get close to 400 hp when all said and done. this is wat i am doing to it, im going to hone it, flat top the pistons. i got magnum heads off a 97 5.2. putting on an high performance edelbrock intake, summit cam, amc lifters, headers, and a 650 edelbrock. and maybe a higher point distributer. is there anything else anyone can think of that i can do to make this puppy scream the tires off of my van?

Re: the 318 beast!
400 horses is a bit of a stretch from 318 cubes, expecially with iron heads.
Read up on Hot Rod mag's 318 build-up. Good info there.
You really want tire frying power, go with a stroker (410+ is easy with a 360) some Edelbrock or Mopar heads and a serious valvetrain and induction.

A real nice crate 360 for 5500
http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/mr36macren.html
If you price out all the stuff you need to build one, that's a good price. Line up the price lists from the Hot Rod builds and check current prices carefully.
How about a 440 cubic inch small block?

Of course, for that price, you coulda had a Hemi
Sale Price: $12,695.00

Re: the 318 beast!
The 340 is mythical, I've have a couple. Good engines, but really if you are rebuilding, a 360 is the same basic engine.
If you build it the same, it will perform.
If you stroke it, it will rev better, put out more torque and HP and can still be passed off as a 318 to most.

Re: the 318 beast!
They are both gone. One was a 73 cuda 340 I sold back in the 80s and the 340 Demon in the pic I sold a couple years ago. I currently have a 360 for my van, the 360 that came out, a 400 core motor, another 400 for the race car, and the 451 that I took apart from the race car. None are for sale.

Re: the 318 beast!
Great Guys- back in 75 I bought an origional LS-6 chev in a crate from my small home town dealer- factory rated at 450HP & 465 lbs torque- yes u can look that up in the old books- at same time a 71 vette dual disc clutch setup , all for $800.00 bucks & installed all in my 67 vette coupe =I still have . and for what its worth- nothing ever touched it = esp. after I put some 3.08's in the rear!! Could & still pull 1st. to 2nd. gear @ 70mph-then watch out for 2 & 3rd> never did need that 4th in a race=
