No Beep Beep when driving - Horns Empty No Beep Beep when driving - Horns

Post by blackace Fri Jan 21, 2011 8:04 am

I am looking to see if anyone has any dual (High/Low) horns that work, that they are interested in getting rid of. I have checked the yards around my area and they don't carry any of these types of vehicles. If anyone that does have access to some, if you could keep your eyes open for them and also test them if they allow I would be greatly interested in them. I have checked all the different auto parts stores in town and they don't have anything that looks at good as the originals.

Also would be interested in any other solutions that anyone has done to fix horns that don't work.

Does anyone know if there is a horn relay that I can also check? When I hit the horn bar, I hear a click but no sound. I have tested each horn on a car battery with the hot wire and ground wire and get nothing from either one. Have put WD40 down both of them to try and get it to break loose. Is this the right way to check a horn, and is there a way to check the relay if there is one?

Help as I need to be able to honk at the people that crane their necks to see the truck and the beautiful wife in the passengers seat cheers

The horn relay has 3 wires to it,,,,,,the power, the horns and the button to connect the power to the horns. So unplug the relay, jump across the power and horn wire to see if the horns work. As long as you don't press the horn button, that wire is dead, so you can just try jumping across all 3 wires and see if the horns work. And if you hear the relay clicking when you press the horn button, then you know the power and button wires are working, then you need to check IF the power is coming out of the relay. If it is, then there is a problem in the wire going to the horn, if there is no output, the relay is bad or the connections are dirty.

Thanks for the help. I was trying to test the horns with just a power to one post and a ground to either negative post of a car battery. I assumed that it would work as it had power and ground. I will test them the way you suggest and see if they work.

Can you tell me where the relay would be located on the truck?

You might not have a relay if the horns have 2 wires on them,,,,,,if so, you check and see if there is power to one of the wires on it, then the other one is the ground from the button,,,,,,,,,so ground that one with the power wire on it to see if horn works. Another test,,,,,unplug those wires, put a 12 volt test light across those 2 wires,,,,,see if pressing the horn button lights the light,,,,,,those horns need good connections and contacts to work, so just do some checking to try and isolate the problem area. But if you cant get the horns to work by hooking them up to a battery,,,,,,,you need horns,,,,,

As for the horns, one has two male prongs, one wire coming from the relay, and the other going to the 2nd horn, which only has one male connector on it.

And is what I figured when there was not even a peep from either horn when I hit it was a car battery straight up.

I like you idea of the test light on the relay and wiring. I will give that a shot once it gets a bit warmer. Below zero right now so figure it can wait a bit.

There are 2 different types of horns, a 1 wire that needs 12 volts from a relay to operate it and it needs to be grounded to the body of the truck and a 2 wire that that has 12 volts to it and needs a ground signal from the button to operate it. AND,,,,,,,,you don't know what people have put on it over the years. So substitute a 12 volt test light in the horns place and see if the button makes it light. If you do test the horn with the positive hooked right to the terminal and the body of the horn connected to the negative post and the horn don't work, try turning the adjuster screw on the horn to see if there is any noise still left in it.

Ok I will give them a test and let you know the outcome of the tests. My figure is that the horns need replaced. As for not knowing what has happened to them, they are stock as it was my grandmothers truck and I know she did not replace them.

Will keep everyone informed on what I find out.

working on the horn myself today- the wiring diagram for your 68 as well as my 66 shows a relay - mine is on the bracket directly in front of steering wheel - however if you checked each horn individually to a battery i would guess you have problem with the horns - i only have single horn and it was weak and intermittent - i grabbed a horn at the junkyard, a single wire, installed - no longer weak but still intermittent - had already pulled the relay and cleaned the contacts - pulled the switch mech in steering wheel and cleaned and applied deoxit 5 - have a couple more things to check but i know at least the horn is good - oo3

The horns ground through the body. The one horn with 2 wires is so they could supply power to the other horn as you noticed.
If the horn is still attached to the van, with a battery connected to the body (ground), connect a jumper wire to the terminal. Horns pull quite a bit of power, so there should be a small spark.
If the horn is off the van, use one jumper wire from battery "-" to the mounting bracket (make sure it's to bare metal) and battery "+" to the terminal.
If nothing happens, connect a light between the jumper wire and the terminal. If it lights, the horn has continuity (a complete path). If it does not, wiggle the connections to make sure it's not just a bad connection. If none of this makes the horn work, there is usually a Phillips screw with a nut at the base somewhere on the horn. Try turning it small amounts (1/8th of a turn) in each direction.

Thanks for the updates. I am going to get some pics of them so everyone can see what I have and will show and post the results of it. Had planned to work on it last night as I got kicked out of house due to tupperware party, but got to babysit grandboy, so will do the testing tonight..

Here are a few pics of the horns for anyone that is looking to see what a high / low horn would look like. Plan on working on adjustment screw and testing per instructions given
