External Coil Test? Empty External Coil Test?

Post by Scott Fri Nov 26, 2010 6:14 pm

My coil is getting juice, but how do I test if spark is coming from the coil? I tried plugging a spark plug into the coil wire but I don't see a spark.

But I also don't know if that is supposed to work.

How do I test a coil?

Yes a grounded spart plug on the coil wire should work fine

Make sure the coil wire is good and there is no carbon track on the coil tower. Clean the top of the coil well.

What ignition do you have, points?

    Alight alright, I'm busted..

I am trying to use the first HEI that came out. It was originally used in a 75 Camaro. It was totally rebuild and has all new components in it.

So tonight I try to get my first start and no spark to the plugs. I check the power going into the coil and the coil is really hot. I'm thinking it's a bad coil, but wanted to narrow it down first.

Since putting a grounded spake plug right on the coil wire isn't working, and it's really hot, that's probably the problem.

,,,,well if you are using the 1st edition HEI, substitute the original type coil in its place and see if the distributor makes spark jump out of that coil,,,,,and the test of a coil is to take a test light and probe the NEGATIVE side of the coil and crank the engine,,,,,,the test light should blink. (firing the coil). If the light is always on or always out,,,,,,module is not doing its job,,,,,

actualy a spark plug is lame.

I always stick a screw driver in the coil wire and hold it so the screw drive shaft is about 1/4" away from a ground source.

I do that because I need the variable gap. I want to see a good spark and I draw the spark longer to about 1/2" How long of a spark you get is an indication of how many volts its producing which is a good measure of the ignition systems health.

A real HEI should give about 1/2" to 5/8" spark (60,ooo volts) that older style coil of yours should give about a 1/2" to 3/8" spark about 35,000 volts

Thanks for all the troubleshooting ideas, but it turns out that I wired it wrong. I woke up this morning, checked a wire diagram, then realized I had run a ground wire from the negative connection on the coil. I removed that wire and it fired right up.

I'll try to get the short clip posted.
