Does anyone know where I can get hold of a template for a ceiling panel for a 68 Sportvan 90? I have all of the side ones. Thanks

Making Ceilling Panel Templates
Captain,
Going to be making another one for the new Sportvan in a week or two.
Pretty simple really, just get a big piece of cardboard (Refridge box works great). Cut two 24" wide strips and as long as you can handle. Then start above the windows in back placing the cardboard strips along the roof ridge (above the windows) and tape them in place. Work towards the front and stopping at the roof rib behind the front seats. Do the same on the other side. Then take a larger piece and tape in the center connecting both sidepieces. You now should have the whole center covered from behind the front seats to about 12" from the rear. Now take smaller pieces and cut to fit the back corners and a 12" to 15" strip across the back. Keep in mind to "curve the cardboard" on every edge. This is "VERY" important to get a good measurement for your ceiling panel. Once you have all your rear pieces in place. Tape all of them together “REALLY” well! And carefully remove it as one piece. Not sure what you’re planning on using for your panel material, I’m using white polyethylene paneling sheets (White plastic 4x8 paneling sheets) from Home Depot….
Lay the template on the backside of the panel to be used placing the template upside down so both the new panel(s) and template are facing down. You now might have to cut the template in the back corners to get it to lay flat. Now trace you template and “ADD 1” all the way around the outside of the template” “Trust me”…. Been there, done this more than once! Easier to cut of a inch than to try to add it! 90% of the time it's perfect with the extra inch...
Captain,
Not sure if you have the headliner hangers above your windows or not couldn’t find any pictures of your van on the site or in “Member Gallery’s” (Hint, hint!)
The hanger’s make it real easy to install but if not you’ll need a way to secure the panel along the sides.
*** (Metal mirror clips for your bathroom mirror work really well)***.
Repeat for the ceiling over the front. Keep in mind you can “TUCK” the panel in above the windshield and door frames. It looks really clean but you have to create a tranistion at the roof rib where it meets the rear panel.
A lot of it is “Trial & Error” you will figure it out. Just give yourself lots of time and be patient (do not attempt after a few beers! I have to tell myself that a lot!).
Hope this helps,
Dan

Don,
What did you use to hold the edges of the panels? Or did you cut slots for the roof ribs and "Tuck" the panels?

Nothing attaches them to the side rails,,,,,,since the roof is like 56" wide, I used 2 pieces of the 48" wide to go from the dome light to the rear doors,,,,,a 36" piece above my seat and sunroof. I also added some more ribs and attached the paneling with fancy self tapping sheet metal screws through the ribs,,,,,,,

Yes, what I thought about was the two side seats like you have. Then I thought about having the seats lift open fold down to make a bed. It reminds me of the small travel trailer set up. The only thing stopping me is I need a bench seat right now for baby seats!!!Got to bring the fam..

That's the good part of having a van,,,,,,,,build it to suit your life,,,,,,,change it as life changes,,,,,,,,,I have had a lot of different set ups throughout the years,,,,,,I like this one the best,,,,,,,there is a cushion that goes between to 2 side seats in back,,,,,so you got 3 bench seats around a table that comes out and the cushions fold down into a bed,,,,,,,,take out the table and rear cushion and I can put a motorcycle, cherry picker or engine in there through the back doors,,,,,,,

And one very important thing that Don mentioned. "Self Tapping Screws" will make the job much, much easier!!!! I use them for everything....
