Post by JUMPMASTER Tue Sep 21, 2010 8:51 am

    Hello,

    Busting my forum cherry!!!

Started my 1967 G10 resto project. Anybody with some good sites/places to get parts from? If you know of somewheres I can order a catalog from, even better!

I have restored a couple of Chevelles but I'm having a hard time finding parts for this van! Also, any tips or comments on your experiences restoring one of these vans will be appreciated.

    Thanx,

    Airborne all the way! HOOAH!

Welcome Jump ! From the pic of your avatar, the van looks pretty good.Unlike the Chevelle line, there aren't resto parts dime-a-dozen.Ya got the link above, steering parts, bushings and of course motor parts are out there.
Sheet metal...usually somebody, somewhere is cuttin up a donor and theirs some on ebay too.Members here post parts for sale also.I know if not for them,I'd be in trouble.I just collect as I go till the day to use them.

    Nightmoves,

Thanx for the info. I got the 67 G10 from the original owner with only 122,000 mi! It is in "perfec condition" for a resto. I have restored a 65 Impala, 68 & 71 Chevelles but like you said, parts were easy to find. I see you have a Dyna...I have a 2010 FatBob which will be taking rides on my G10 on looooong trips!

    Peace-out!

    -JM

Hi Jumpmaster! Welcome to the site! Lots of good info here. And we can what ideas you bring from your previous restorations.

I ride a 2000 Road King. Are you saying you are going to transport your FatBob in the back of your van? Will it fit? I would like to be able to move my bike with my van but it seems like it would be tricky getting it in and out.

And I've already found my 8-track player (on eBay)! Glad I could find a Deluxe to go with my Sportvan Deluxe! Very Happy

    VANagain,

My FatBob is very low profile (no ape hangers, lol) and as long as I don't sit on it (work the clutch and front brake standing on the left side) it will go in. Fill the gap on the rear driver seat (next to the dog house) with the front tire and angle the rear towards the spare tire and voila'! (don't forget to duck!)

Right now I'm working on getting the turn signal switch replaced to see if I get the turn signals to work. The hazzard lights work so I think that replacing the two "plastic pieces" and the springs will do the trick. (I bought the hardwear at Advance Auto Parts for $12.00.)

Tomorrow I'm heading to junkyards to see if I do some scavenging...

    Happy trails,

    JM

    Progress update...

Got the turn signal "cam" installed, now I can turn with my arm still in the van! I still have no reverse lights (who cares, right).
Found in the junkyard brackets (from a 78 van) that replaced the cargo door straps. Now I can open the doors and they will stay that way. Also got a chevrolet emblem from the same van (I was missing the one on the rear doors).

    Question for you guys...

My front turn signal lights work fine for turning, with the hazards and with my parking lights (with the light switch halfway out) but when I turn the headlights on they got out (they still work for turning and hazard). Is this the way they are supposed to work, or do I have a problem???

    Thanx!

    JM

IF,,,,,,,,the parking lights go out WHEN you put the headlights on,,,,,THEN,,,,,,you need to switch the front parking light wires to the tail light wire on the back of the headlight switch,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    Another milestone!

After doing extensive work on the roof of my van (the "metal ribs" were unatached to the roof and the roof was doing "the wave" plus it had a few holes) I was worried about leaks. Today rained all day, used the van all day and NO LEAKS!!! WOOOHOOO!!! cheers

While you are enjoying those ribs, spray some rust remover and rust encapsulator up into the rail behind the ribs. That area is bare metal and as soon as rust forms in there around the spot welds, you get water coming in from the drip rails,,,,,,,

    donivan65,

I removed the ribs, grinded the rust, used rust remover and a "rust stop" spray before I put the primer, then, I reatached the ribs. It looks like it is going to hold, at least for a few years so it will be no more damage in case I decide/have enough dough to do a frame off resto. I did the same in the whole cargo area and the undercarriage. The body has a couple of dings/dents but no rust.

    Thanx for the info!

As long as you spray something up behind the roof rail all the way around the van,,,,,including behind the sunvisors, and especially above the rear doors, you will be extending the life of your van and stopping a bunch of rust misery in the future.
