Looking for what type of sealer to use when installing the front windshield glass in a 1st gen Chevy. Also any tips on the proper procedure, for example rubber on glass first? Sealer on both sides of rubber? Any special tools to use? Any other tricks of the trade???

Hopefully you have a gasket that fits,,,,,,we tried 4 different ones from 66 pick ups to get one that fits,,,,,,,you put the gasket on the windshield,,,,,you put a rope in the outside channel and spray the channel with silicone,,,,,someone holds the windshield up against the outside and pushes against it while someone else pulls the rope out which causes the gasket to jump over the frame wall,,,,,,,there is a lot of pushing and pulling to get the windshield to sit inside the frame......soapy water did not work for me,,,,,and if you put sealer in 1st, the rope wipes it out,,,,,,,

You can buy a sealant in tubes that can be used in a mastic gun to get a proper seal. As you have probably already found out, just using a rubber seal does not guarantee that the thing will seal properly.
I usually take my vehicles down to the local windscreen specialists. He runs this stuff around under the rubber lip. It stays soft permanently, and is black in colour, and the excess cleans off with white spirit. Not sure where you can get it in the USA but i would start with Ebay myself....

Great pics as usual don. I test fit the rubber and it seems to fit. I will post a pic later. Not quite ready to put the glass in but soon. How would you recomend putting the sealer on?

Sy's plan is a good one,,,,,,,pull back the rubber,,,,,,shoot sealer in it,,,,,,you got the inner channel with the glass and the outer channel that fits over the body flange,,,,,Something with a long tip would be good,,,,,,you could probably put the sealer in the inner channel and put the gasket on the glass and let it dry,,,,,,then go fight with getting the glass with the gasket on it to slip inside of the van. There are different types of sealers,,,,,,some are like almost liquid,,,,that would be good for the glass channel,,,,,,,the outside channel has like a rubber block that sits against the frame and an outer skirt that goes over the body,,,and that skirt wants to go inside the frame so you got to keep pulling it out so it fits on the body. When you test fit the gasket onto the van, you will see how the outer skirt of the gasket needs to be pulled out to fit on top of the frame, not in it like that rubber block section with the ridges does.

The stuff to use is 3M bedding and glazing compound. Its comes in a tube like caulk. Put it in the seal before you put the seal around the glass. Use the rope and install like Don said, then squirt sealant between the gasket and the body. The 3M sealant doesnt really dry so you can replace the windshied again without ruining the seal.

I have a new seal. I got it from the local Hot Rod / Classic Car parts store. I'm pretty sure it is the same as the LMC For 66-67 truck

Re: Sealer for Instal of Front Window???
Well,,,,, if it has a bunch of pits in it, that would be the outside on an old windshield,,,,,otherwise its the same and you get to watch the chips start showing up on your brand new pretty windshield,,,,,There might be some writing on it so that should be able to be read from the outside,,,,,(if you want to get technical),,,,,,
