I was thinking to "like" your post but it is a sad truth that I don't like at all. Your statement is so true.
Unlike you I have never served and am a lifelong rebel. If I had volunteered I likely would have been promptly discharged or worse for my behavior, I have never been able to take orders. We come from very different pasts yet see this current state of the union in VERY similar ways.
I raised 2 boys, my youngest now 30 and taught them to be open to all, to learn, be tolerant of others, all race, religion, beliefs, politics and even of gays.
Due respect is given to all at first, exactly what I expect coming back to me. If someone felt the need to ask for more than that my first thought would be why? When that person demands attention from me they won't like what they get, (bitchslapping comes to mind)
After the first bit of due respect all else is EARNED.
