Can this be done? Empty Can this be done?

Post by Guest Sat Aug 16, 2008 12:18 am

I was wondering if this is possible. If so what would it take and is there anyone out there would know how much this would cost to do? I was going to sell my van awhile ago but I'm thinking of making it a little more interesting.

I guess the 1962 VW bus picture got me thinking if its possible to do with my 1964 chevy van. If any of you guys do this kind of work let me know what it would take and cost. I would be willing to help make this possible.
    Thanks
    Anthony

This 1962 VW bus was split, but it was sold.

Yes...It could and has been done in the past, but makes the vehicle very "Unstable" for highway driving! Too short of a wheel base!

    Thanks for the replies guys.

B.W., How Unstable would it be? Would it be all over the road ? Can It be fixed in the steering or lowered a little? I wonder if you take it past 60 it would just blow over and start rolling on its own. hahaha
Fred Thanks for the picture. Thats so sweet! afro Shocked Very Happy Is that your van? Wonder how that one worked out for ya.

it can be done . and the big trick to doing it is money lots of money!!! about 3500.00 for the chop and then to shorten it at the same time about another 1500.00 then theres the glass and windshield ,fuel lines, brake lines ,drive shaft, lowering it ect, ect, ect but hey if you got the money i got the shop ,,, And after all that it may still be a scarry ride and a bit unstable but so is a samari with the wrong tires on it !! It will look real good but it will just be a trailer queen..

I have shortened my '69 GMC 108 down to a wheelbase of 83". I wouldn't go any shorter if you plan to drive on highway. The van acts a lot like a Jeep.

My guess that chopped & shorten 2nd gen in the pic above, would have a WB of about 65 in (- one side door(=25in+or-) I remember that pic in Vans & Trucks mag at one of the Nats, there was another chopped 2nd gen(I Think) with Really big meats on the back.

Yes, my GMC is chopped. I went 5" not to go too radical. I will dig out pictures and submit soon. It had windows down the sides (Handibus) and I removed those to make it a panel.

Well the modifing is limited to your imagination.
And this animation is huge and getting way to complicated with too many pieces to make this puzzle.
But this is how I learn.
