automotive primer paint Empty automotive primer paint

Post by Guest Mon Apr 19, 2010 12:08 pm

getting ready to do a paint job on the panel.
i want to do it meself, got the aircompressor, the gun, masking tape, and lots of newspaper.
still deciding what color to go, i was thinking bauhaus gold OR teal
what im wondering is if the primer color tone affects the outcome, i bet it does
but want to ask first to those who know.
been looking at the rust-o-leum products, at the wally world they have the spray cans for 2 bucks a pop
but they have light gray, dark gray, red primer...
    any help. thanks

If you have the gun and compressor why not spray your primer with it? Primer color does affect final color out come.I have painted several Harleys and my pick-up with HOK products their website has all the tech info and directions you should need for a nice job from primer to sealer to base coat to clear.

well i mentioned the rustoleum to note a difference between the primer shades.
i will do everything that i can as close to perfect as my abilities will allow.
got a straight body for the most part and the paint right now is almost gone, some sanding then primer but first check out that website..
    thanks

Are you thinking about using the rattle cans to prime your truck?

if you are painting a metalic color it will make a difference, if you are painting
a solid color usually it won`t make much difference. the type of primer is
what you need to pay attention to. enamel with enamel, lacquer with lacquer,
urethane with urethane. most primers you can tint up to 10% with color,
just makes the primer harder to sand if you have to.

Hey Panelmanrd, some of that primer is direct to metal, some need an etch,,,,,,,,have you run across any problems if you were working with bare metal? Or just use Epoxy?

a good self etching primer works great, if not you have to scuff up the
surface with some 220 or so paper.

i used rattle cans to paint the econoline. does not look bad at all.
and know some people around town who have painted their "rat rods"
with spray paint cans too, most use flat or satin finish..
but i got the tools to paint it now with the gun. just getting ready to do it

What have you got for a gun? We went with a etch/fill primer, then a primer sealer, you can get this in lights and darks and it can make a difference in the final paint , then a single stage enamel paint. The reason I ask about the gun is they differ on operating pressures ( learned this the hard way) and what kind of paints they like to shoot. I'm no paint pro by any means ,just try to learn from my mistakes. if you use the rattle cans for primer do a test for reaction with the paint on something.
