I just put the standard heavy gear lube like we use in everything in my 4:11 posi. What is supposed to go in there, or will that be okay?

Re: Rear End Gear Lube Q
once upon a time posi fluid was different then regular hypoid oil. Now the gear oil sold is said to be good for both. But thats because the materials used in modern posi and limited slip gears is a modern materil whos coeficient of friction is not changed by the gear oil produced today.
But I don't know if that applies to old time clutch materials.

I have always used an additive when changing lube in a posi.

Yes, the original anti-friction additive was made from stuff we are not supposed to kill anymore. The best stuff available now for posis that I know of is the GM additive.
For the rest of the fluids, you can try some or the various synthetic lubricants, but go with a brand that has been around a while and is proven. There is a reason why 'snake oil' is a term indicating a bunch of hype!
Redline, Amsoil, and Royal Purple have been around long enough to have been proven to work. There are others, I haven't used any to give you first hand results.

"stuff we are not supposed to kill anymore" Do you mean Whale oil ? I had a friend tell me that the other day, I had never heard of it. Going for the additive for now. I am picking up some noise in the rear end, put a stethoscope on it today and I may be changing out those pinion bearings I "thought were okay". Thanks guys, for the input.

These guys are NOT cheap, but their products are what Ski Areas use in the gear boxes of Chair Lifts when hundreds of lives are 'on the line' literally!

The higher end stuff is good for three quarters of a million miles...
