Both. That is why I built a 200 cid to have more HP than a stock 302 and still get great mpg.

At the moment I am just happy it runs.
If I really need to go fast I would drive a modern car.
Like me, my van is being built for Pleasure not for Speed

All of my vans in the past have had stock or rebuilt stock engines in them.
When i put the "beast" together.I wanted something mildly Hot Rodded.
The GM crate engine with a low end torque cam we the ticket.
I have scare quite a few of my car guys buddies and a few vanner friends in the old girl.........
16 MPG on the open road is not all that bad.
The fun I have driving this van is priceless........

I would love to have an engine in mine that could hit 40 mpg. I have no experience with these straight 6 engines, so if this one i have turns out to be rubbish, i will probably put an engine out of a modern car in it instead. Maybe a BMW diesel engine or something similar....
If fuel was as cheap over here as it is in the USA i don't think i would care too much if it was 10 mpg.....!!!

As much fun as HP would be, I live way too far away from everything... it's the highway or no way. I need highway driveability, but don't want to pay an arm and a leg to get anywhere.

    My perfect ride:

Cargo space of a super sized Dodge Sprinter
    Gets over 30 mpg
Drivetrain as reliable as a Subaru
Blows the doors off a Bugatti Veyron
    Body of a '63 Vette
    Corners like it's on rails
    As safe as a Volvo
Rides like a '69 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham
As fun as a Jeep Wrangler
    Towing capability of a 4 door 4x4 Duramax/Allison powered dually pick-up
    MSRP under $25,000
    Lifetime bumper to bumper warranty
And it'll fit in my garage lol!

As you can see, you have to compromise and go with what works for you. I'm very happy with what I have and hope to never have to part with it. Wink

That! I agree with above ... that's how I feel about my van and hope I can get that kind of results for my Mercury van. Cool

Even with the I6 the mpg isn't that great (about 15) but the price of fuel is what really sucks.

All I want is to cruise, and maybe a wheelstand from time to time. At the very least a good smokey burnout!
